Staufenbeil smokes to Barona Oaks MX win B y Seymour Bettys 38 RAMONA CA, JUNE2 , Timmy Staufenbei l raged through the pac k in both motos to score the overa ll win in the highl y com petiti ve 125cc Intermediate class at the final ro und of the CMC/ Shoei Spring Classic Series, held a t Baron a Oaks Raceway. Den nis Dah lin held the ear ly lead in the first moto, whil e Stau fenbeil was mir ed at the start an d com pleted the fir st lap in seventh. J ack Cox held on to the runner-up posi tio n, while Todd Davis held down fou rth. Slow ly but surely, Stau fenbeil p icked off h is rivals and moved towards the front of the pac k aboard his Poway H onda·K awasaki lThor/ Ceet/ Acerbis/Motul/Pro Circuit/Sprocke t Specialties/Smith-backed H onda. With two laps to go, Sta ufenbeil closed on Dahlin's rear fender and waited for a mista ke. Sta ufenbe il sailed past in a series of jump s and took over the lead , lea vin g Dahlin to conte nd with Billy J oe Mercier, who had also stormed through the pack after a poo r start. Staufenbeil sailed over the finis h lme in first, ahea d of Dahl in , Mercier and Co x. Mo to two saw Staufenbei l gate poorly, wh ile Mercier took comrol of the ear ly lead ahead of Dahl in and Davis. Staufenbeil turned up the wick and q ui ckly closed the gap on the fro nt run ners. Davis and Dah li n fell victim to Sta ufenbeil's charge in the back section of the track. On ce into second, Staufenbei l set his sights on Mercier, who had a comfortable lead.
