Martin rounded out the top five. Ron Flick landed the overall victory in the 125cc C class , scoring 2-1 moro fini shes . Clark deans up at Midway MX By Rolfe Otterness 40 KELLOGG, MN, M 26 AY Marty Clark aced both motos of th e Open A class to ta ke the win a t Midway Recreat ion Park MX. Jay Hoenk did his best to den y Clark the victo ry, but ended the day as runner-up. Hoe nk powered to the fro nt in . the firs t moto, with Clark second. Clar k settled into a pace that kept H oenk in sight, but did not push him in the ear ly pa rt of th e race. At th e ha lfway ma rk he closed in and bega n to pressure the leader. Hoenk tried to gai n some time by taking th e big triple j um p on the back side of the co urse. Hoen k clea red the j um p , only to overshoo t the nex t co m er. Clark made th e pass whi le Hoenk re-en tered the track a few feet behind. Clark too k the checkered foll owed by Hoenk, Jack Parenteau and Dave J en dr o. C H oen k and Clark renewed their duel in th e second moto, as Hoenk held the ini tial lead. Clark held back slig htl y on th e first two laps, then poured on th e pressu re. On the last lap, the lead ers enco un tered some lappers and .Clark dr ew a longside Hoenk o ver th e double. Cla rk used the lappers to his advantag e, and took the lead down the next straight. Hoenk j umped in a last atte mp t at the win , but overshot the foll ow ing corner and slid o ut. Clark scored the victory. Parenteau and J endro trai led Hoenk at the checkered. In the highly competitive 25 Plus class, Ch ris H ughes jumped o rr the li ne lo hold an early lead in mo lO o ne. Brad Erickson and Alan Stevenso n gave chase in second and th ird . Bryan Hunt seemed to be the fastest rider on th e trac k, as he moved through traffi c after a poor sta rt and in to second. Hugh es went do wn and H un t was o rr to take th e chec ke red two la ps lat er . Ste venson a nd Erickson also got by, wh ile Hugh es resta rted hi s bik e in tim e to retain fou rt h ahead of Ro bert Bergstrom. Aaron Kolb pulled a good hol esho t in the next rnoto, but Hunt d ispl aced him for th e lead on the fir st lap. Hunt ma intained a safe marg in to ta ke th e wi n as Bergstr om took second. Lucero pas.sed Faria in tur n one o n the seco nd lap a nd an instant la ter Co llins parked on the cus h ion an d Ermolenko breezed insi de for the lead an d was gone. L ucero's ho ld on second didn 't last lo ng as he drihed wide and Faria went back un derneath. Faria went after Co lli ns and with Ermolenko racing away, th e fans switched the ir att enti o n to the battle for seco nd. On th e last lap , Faria inched pa st Collins o n the back ch ute. Erm olenk o bagged th e win with Co llins com ing back past Faria to ta ke second by a spoke . In Handicap acu o n, rook ie J ohn Aden pushed his KAT Equipment Rental/Design 's Royal e/Jim's Towmg/RACE King Jawa to th e front and never look ed back. Don Odom manned second wi th Erm olenk o third a t the outset. Odom crept clos e to th e lead er o n lap three , but a wheelie a la p later dropped him far behind . Odorn slowly mad e up ground, a nd on the fina l circuit he came to the pole a nd began reeling Aden in . Off the fina l turn, O dom stayed lo w and go t.a big driv e, then pulled alongs ide Aden fo r a ph oto finis h. CARLSBAD, CA, JUNE 9 Steve Meier charged to the overall victory in th e 125cc Beginner class at the Raci ng Enterprises Saturday MX at Carlsbad Ra ceway. Bobby Alle n , riding a modified Kawaskai KX80 big wheel, holesho t the firs t mot o ahead of Justi n Lusia n, Josh Eder a nd Meier. Allen was o n th e gas and bega n to stre tch o u t to a big lead, wh ile Meier began to slice his way pas l riders tow ard s the front. Lusian, wh o has just moved u p from th e 80cc bikes, was ridi ng well but was no mat ch for Meier as he shot by and set o ut after leader Allen . Meier closed th e ga p but ra n o ut of time as Allen took the chec kered nag first ahead of Meier, Lusian and Eder. Meier came ou t smo kin g for moto two a nd ~abbed th e ear ly lead with Allen and Lusian 10 tow . All en wa s pressuring for th e lead early and went down hard in a sli ppery comer. Allen remounted slowly, but was soo n up to speed and mo ving through th e pack. Meier was in co n trol as he too k the win in style ahea d of All en , Lusian and Eder. Pro class action saw BiJly Frank and Bri an Man ley stage a two-mote, 24-lap dogfight that saw the lead exchanged several times. The pass came on the th ird lap, after whIch Young simply rode away to viclOry. Wiggins held on 10 seco nd, to ppin g Bill y Felts and Scotty Bris tol. . Jeff Scott jumped the gate in the seco nd moto and led for two ' turns befor e cras h ing out of control in a tigh t set of turns. Young quickly picked up th e lead and within three laps opened a hv e-second gap over T ony Amarad io and Felts, wh o were battling closely for second. Halfway through the molO , Young's Race Tech/La Habra Suzuki deve.loped a rear nat. Young slowed his pace but (... . con tin ued to ride in the attack position all th e wa y to th e moto victory. Amaradio and Felts finished second and thud. The compe ti tio n proved much stiffer in the 250cc Pro class for Youn~ as he found himself third at th e end of the Iirst lap behind Bill y Frank and Brian Manley. . Besides havin g to keep pace with the leaders, Young was also for ced to deal with Shau n Kalos who was knocki ng ha rd on his back doo r. Young displaced Man ley early in the race, then attacked leader Frank for the remainder of th e moto which resu lted in a last-lap pass for the moto wi n. Frank fin ished second followed by Kalos, Fra nk again took the holeshot during the second mo to with Kalos and Young in tow. Kalos quickly put the moves on Frank as did Young a few laps later an d set the stage for a face-off between Kalos and Young for first.. Kalos kept a two-s econd lead on Young, hol ding him in chec k up to th e finish.
