A total ban - on tobacco com p any advertisi ng is of great concern to not on ly m otorsports, but to many ot her spo rts, and efforts to bring such a ban about are not restricted to European coun tries as th ey have surfaced in this coun try as we ll. Some politicians are calli ng for a com p lete ban of both tob acco and alcohol advert ising in the spor ts field. The loss of th e eno rmo us am ount of funds in jected in to motorsports by toba cco com panies would definitely be difficu lt to swallow, but lif e in the fast lane would go on . . . Editor. Sleaziest of stories Yo ur recen t story, "Gra ha m arrested, fired ," has to rank among the sleaz ies t o f stories ever written in Cycle News. I was unawarethat Cycle News had gone to a National Enquir er-style pub lication. Befo re passing j u dgement o n R icky, o ne m us t remember that California has th e strictest of laws regard i ng alcoho l u se w hile driving. J u st by drinki ng one beer, being tested immed ia tel y afterward, ca n p u t so me people over th e lega l lim it . I don' t co n do ne drinkin g a nd driving, but let all the facts be kn o wn before making headlin es o ut of a for mer G rand Na ti onal Champion . I have been a friend a nd fan of R icky Graham for over 12 years. Du ring tha t time R icky h as gaine d my respe ct bo th on a nd off th e track. In these days of shrinking rider en tr ies at th e Camel Pro events, bad press is the last th ing th e sport needs. Let's hope Ri cky gets his problem cleared up a nd ge ts his rid e back . He truly is one o f the great racer s o f.o ur time. Den n is Camp P aso Robles, CA Graham 's absence at the Pom ona Half M ile was news. A nd th e reason beh ind his absence was news. Please don 't co n f use rep ort ing th e n ew s with fabricating news. We'r e pl eased to repo rt that Graham and ESP are back together. See ou r cov erage of th e San Jose Mi le in Ihis issue . . . Editor. Call for safer tracks This morning I h eard tha t the European co untries are considering bann ing a ll tobacco a d verti s i n g, including logos d isplayed in re lation to ra cing spon so rsh ip . Are there any G P ro ad ra cing teams that are not sp on sored b y tobacco co m p a n ies? What wou ld happen if this goes into effec t? I wou ld be interested in hearing th e racing comm u n ity' s opinion. Has anyone noticed that a lmost all of the to p U .S. riders have had to re tire from raci ng due to inj uries ca used by supercross-type j u m ps? (Top ride rs like) Donnie H ansen , Danny " Magoo" Chandl er , D a v id Bai ley , J ohnny O 'Mara, R ick Joh nson. And no w Jef f Stanton wipes o ut his shou lder by landing o n th e' face o f a double jump. And don 't fo rget th e n u mero us wrist and ankle in jur ies J eff Ward has suffered d ue to casing it o n double jumps, It seems ironic that supercross has he lped American ri ders devel o p the skills need ed to make them the best in the world, bu t now it is forcing the m into early retiremen t. No wonder the Europeans are beating us - we do n't h ave many top riders left! Ma ke supercro ss safe! Dave Vockins New to wn, C T J ohn Bush C u lve r C ity.
