Doohan first, Lawson thirdin Italy _ R othmans Honda's Michael Doohan won his second straight 500cc Grand Prix at round five of the World Championship Road Race Series in Misano, Italy, on May 19, The Australian beat Marlboro Roberts Yamaha's John Kocinski by 8.677 seconds. Four-time World Champion Eddie Lawson (righ t) finished a popular third on the Cagiva, ,giving the Italian motorcycle manufacturer its best -ever dry GP finish. Lawson 's teammate, Alexa ndre Barros, added to the Italian crowd's excitement by finishing fourth . Frenchman J. P. Ru ggia finished fifth on the Son auto-backed Yamaha. Californian Doug Chandler had his best ride of the season, finishing sixth on his Roberts Yamaha while Texan Kevin Schwantz struggled with a chunking rear tire to finish sevent h. Defending World Champion and po le sitter Wayne Rainey pitted early with a blistered rear tire, and rejoined the race to finish ni nth. Doo ha n now leads the championship by, 14 points over Rainey, 91-77, with Kocinski third at 62. Lawson is fourth with 56 and Schwantz is fifth with 55 points. The 250cc GP saw a controversia l finish go to R oth mans Honda 's Luca Cadalora by .009-of-a -second over HB Honda 's H elm u t Bradl. Bradl later protested the race af ter charging Cada lora wi th rough riding but, after looking into the matter , the FIM J ury agreed to let the res ul ts stand. T hird p lace went to Ita lia n P.F. Chil i on the factory Aprilia wi th Loris Regian n i (Apr) and Wileo Zeelenb erg (Hon) rounding ou t the top five fin ishers. Cadalora now leads Bradl in the standings, 97-71, with Carlos Cardu s, sixth in Italy, th ird wi th 65 poi nts. Sidecar passenger Peter Essaff became the first American to stand on a Sidecar GP winner' s rostrum as he and driver Egbert Streuer finished second behind Brits Steve Webster and Gavin Simmons. It was Webster/ Simmons' third consecutive vic tory. Third place went to the Gudel bro the rs, Pau l and Charly. The 125cc GP , meanwhile, was won by AGV Honda 's Fausto Gresini over his teammate and defending World Champion Loris Capirossi. Italian Alessandro . G ramign i finished third. The Motorcycle Division of HarleyDavidson has reported a first quarter sales decrease of $4.5 million. Morris, Pennsylvan ia, May 26. Dowd, a privateer H onda rider from Chicopee, Massachusetts, crash ed during practice at the Meadowlands Supercross, May 18, and broke his colla rbone. "I was going over a triple jump and there was a guy rolling over one of the jumps," Dowd said. "So I moved over , but I guess I moved over a little too far and landed on top of a hay bale." Dowd scored his first -ever National MX win at the March 24 Hangtown National in Sacramento, California. ELECTED: Congressman George Miller as chairman of the H ouse Committee on Interior and Insu lar Affairs on May 9. The committee deals with public lands issues and environmental matters, making its work of critical concern to OHV riders. Miller, who represents California's 7th District in the San Francisco Bay area, has served as acting chairman since January. He succeeds Morris Uda ll, the former congressman from Arizona. While leading the first 125cc heat race at the Meadow lands Supercross, Suzu ki 's Tallon Vo h lan d dislocated his left shou lder after landing hard off a jump. "I just moved into the lead and they watered the track a little bit, " said Vohland. " Whe n my front wheel landed, it slid and caused a jerk on my shoulder and it popped ou t." Vohland fini shed the race in II th place but was taken to a hospital immediately afterwards. He returned .Ia ter that night and watched the 250cc feature race. This is the fourth time that Vohland has dis lo ca ted the shoulder. Creek is surv ived by her son Jeff and daughter Stacy. for th e September 7 Supercross du Pare in Paris, France. The event will take place in the 50,OOO-seat Pare des Princes stadi m. The slow start by American Billy Liles in th e Wor ld Champions hip 500cc MX Series can be attributed to suspension problems, and after blowing fo ur shocks in the first part of th e season Liles has swi tched from Kayaba un its to sp ecial shocks produced by his mechanic, Johan Lu yten. "I blew a shock in Switzerland, another blew and caused me to crash in Finland, and the n two went in Sweden," said Liles at th e May 12 French G P. " Kawasaki asked me to use Kayaba, and they were most helpful leading up to th e GPs. But these problems have cost me too many points. There has been no feedback from Japan." A Kayaba service engineer said that he had never been asked to assist with th e shocks on Liles ' bike, and Luyten admitted that he had modified the Kayaba units. Motocrosser R yan Hughes underwent surgery on May 16 to rep air a broken right wrist. Accord ing to tra iner J eff Spencer, H ughes will be out of action for at least thr ee months. Motocrosser Steve Childress, who suffered crushed vertebrae in an accident during the Carolina Spring MX Series at Top Gun MX in North Carolina, was released fro m the hospital on May 14 and is recoverin g at home.
