's first indoor shon tra ck of the seaso n. . · The first heat saw Rob Smith, Corey J erew, Ian Segedy a nd Gord ie Sch opieray co me orr the 'line tog ether , jousting it out to fin ish in that o rder. In heat two , Jerry Vanderk ooi gra bbed th e holeshot, cha llenged by Kell y Bowlby, wh o ma naged to get past, as Vanderk oo i lap ped -ano rher rid er. Act io n go t even hotter a nd hea vier in th e fina l wh en J erew a nd Sm ith vied for th e holeshot, with Segedy scoo ting by inside Schopieray to third. Segedy boldl y ma neuvered past J erew , th en Smith, and proceeded to p ull a smoo th ha lf-tra ck lead o n the co mpetitio n. Lapped riders mad e ci rcu ms ta nces even mo re exci ting , as j erew took ad va ntage of th e situa tio n to d ive by Smith, slowed be hind a no ther rid er. Seged y then ran into problems, as he a ttempted to lap th e fifth p lace rider who, th inking the pressure was fro m the ra cer in sixth, hel d his hne so tig h tly tha t he bumped Segedy in to th e in field tire, kn ocking th e leader's bik e o ut of gear for j ust lo ng enough for j erew. Smith and Sch opieray to tak e adva ntage of the m ishap. T he 250cc Pro featu re saw Sch opieray a nd Sco tt Stum p push into turn o ne wah Segedy dose behind . Stu mp pulled a way , lea ving Segedy to a lap-by-lap search for a li ne arou nd Schop ieray th at never happened. . Amateur 250d actio n began with a mixem- u p battle between T ommy Ha yden , Rya n Brown and James Gilbert battlin g for the holesho t. Ha yden shot to th e lead. as Er ic Thurla sneak ed in to pass Gi lbert , th en was challe nged by Mike Smith a nd Gary Moor e. Smith took adva ntage of lapped traffi c to get by Thorla , so that heat winners Hayden, Brown and Sm ith finished in th at o rde r; .;. In the Open Ama teur feat ure, hea t winner J ohn Ca rl was o ut of the co m pe tition ea rly wi th mechani cal problems. Bret Slane got to tum o ne first, on ly to be passed by Scott Curran. Tim Lowe held down th ird. T hen Curra n stalled , leavi ng Sla ne to regai n first. Rob Smith grabbed the hoIesho t and was long gone in th e Senior fina l. Gary Moore purs ued hi m in second p lace, while Jim Beck fended orr Cu rt Snelling's charge till th e last la p . I> Competitio n was tough in the 50cc li nal. Although Bill y Hu mphries go t th e ho leshot, Ca sey H am ilton sailed pas t a nd proceeded to lap the field at least o nce. Tommy Lo we held down third for a whi le, but succumbed to cha lle nges by D u sti n Ki lt s and R o ger Thacker.
