it was not enough, as Larsen had h im by a

La rsen made it look easy in th e H and icap
main as he started o n lh e 50 yard-line . b u t

race-long battle betw een J ason Fletche r and
Ken Coolbcth J r. for seco nd pl ace wa s decided
o n the next-to-last la p, Fletch er muscled hi s
way by Coolbe th to tak e seco nd and Coolbe th
sett led for third.
Fletcher j u m ped o u t to a slight lead in th e
Open Expert class foll owed by Ken Da hlin,
Craig Estell e, Scott Snoop and Durkee. On
lap two , Durkee moved around Snoop a nd
began to pressure Est ell e. Estelle dove u nder .

T he Formula One event was the on ly ARRA
race held durin g a weekend o f AMA activities
at Wi llow Sp rin gs.
In wh at turned o ut to be o ne o f th e mos t
exciting races of th e day , G raves took the ear ly
le ad on h i s G reg Lundy-tun ed Suzuki
GSXR I 100. Wh at follow ed was an excit ing
four -rider du el for the lead which last ed from
sta rt to finish .

first lap was Yam aha FZRlOOO-mounted Rrad
H azen a nd in thi rd wa s Bruce T ebo on his
Dunlop-shod Suzuki G SX R 1100.
G rav es began to separate himself from the
o th er ri de rs during th e first two laps, b u t at
the be~i nning o f la p three. he slowed. At th e
sa me tim e, Tebo passed Hazen to tak e secon d
as ' th ey ca me do wn th e front straight. What
had been a tig ht battle for second q uick ly
turned into a four-rider cha se for first as J oe
Brett Williams. riding a H onda R C30, joined
th e lead ers.
Starting lap four, T ebbo pulled pastG raves,
wh o ' qu ick ly recovered the lead go ing into

o n lap 10, but o nce again G raves recovered
q uick ly. In the fina l two laps, Graves began
to separa te hi mse lf from t!)e rest o f-the pack
and crossed the Hnish line three seco nds ahead
o f Tebo. Third p lace wen t to H azen , who had
pass ed Williams in the last few laps o f th e
race.
G raves ackno wledged he was ho lding ba ck
a bi t during th e race.
" I figured f sh ould just go o u t th ere, tak e
it easy, don 't fall o ff and not tak e an y chances
and ~et so me points." he sai d.
With respe ct to his poi nts lead in the F1 serie s. Graves was con fide n t th at he should
have litt le pr obl em in securing lhe titl e.
" I think we have it wrapped u p , but I'm
not positive," he said. " It ·s loo king rea l good,
