Roeseler wins Duster HS By Donnetta and Bob Murray BARSfOW, CA, AUG. 19 Kawasaki T eam G reen 's Larry Roeseler added an other win to hi s lo ng list, but he had to work hard for it , as several top riders battled i t o ut across a cour se that offered mostly virgin terrain a t the Du ster M.C. H are Scrambles at Stoddard Wells near Barstow . Roeseler's fellow T eam Gr een member T ed Hunnicutt na iled the homb run an d was weaving through the bushes in a 1-2 si tuatio n wi th KTM's Da n Smith d uri ng the fir st sectio n of th e co urse. Each time Sm ith would take over theIead, Hun ni cutt would irnmed iatel y bag him back, with the winds bl owing away the dust just righ t for a good d uel. Ano ther T eam Green rider, Vet Pa u l Ostbo, overcame stiff new boots and a two-kick sta rt to ta ke over third p lace at the bomb, wh ile Jim Clark was in fourth. Roeseler was back aro und fifth . Ken Cool beth (32), Mike Hacker (66) and Paul Lynch battled earl y in the 200cc fin al at Trail-Way before sp reading out and finis hi ng in the same order. Smith chose a pa th th rough a rock pile, where he hi t his ch ain gu ide , which derailed h is chain and he had to stop to repair it, Roesel er made his way through the dust and riders. H e emerged at the top of the ridge alone, lookin g for Smi th . With only five mi les to go to th e fin ish , Roeseler co n tinued his pa ce, with one eye over h is shoulder loo king fo r Smith . "Tha t was a hard race. I'm tired:' said Roeseler. Smit h was not far beh ind to clai m seco nd p lace. "Larry and I were havin g a rea l fu n ride un til I h it th e roc k: ' said Smith. "Oh well , I'll get him next tim e." Hunnicutt finall y relented and Ost bo was third to cross th e fin ish lin e for a first p lace Vet finish.
