In Hames' 600cc junior /Expert Pro heat ra Ce the leader at the end of th e usu al firs t , lapsorting out was Robert Damron , who was foll owed through th e esses by Do nnie H arrell and Ha rnes.. As the race progressed it was Harrell a nd Ham es providing the back and forth passin g th at IT raci ng is all abo u t, with H am es blasting . by Harr ell wh en he fin all y bobb led . Pau l Iwa n aga was th ird with Damron endi ng up fou rth . In the semi , Ben Bostro m held the front spot a ll th e way through the esses but got zapped o n the righ t-hander a fter th e jump by Bob Damron wh o co nt i n ued o n to win. Bostro m go t second with Pat McDan iel third a nd jack Zen ke fou rth . Hames a nd Damron th illed the onlookers as they raced for the esses a t the sta r t of the mai n, and they swapped the lead back a nd forth in th e tight twists with Iwan aga rig h t behind them. Ham es even tua lly go t th e up per hand and Damron ha d to sett le for the second spot, leavin g most of the fan cier raci ng to the pack behi nd . O n th e white n ag lap, Iwanaga go t a little wild and Harrell , who had been a ll pa tience beh ind him, gra bbed th e cha nce and came in th ird , follo wed by Iwan aga , Ala n McBee and Mike Inderbiuen. The Pro-Am mai n starred th e Bostrom Brot hers wi th Ben and Tory Bostro m a nd Ted Thompson lean ing back and forth o n each o ther go ing th rou gh the first section. T ory got away fro m th em by 3 sho rt margin . leavin g brother Ben an d Thompso n to scrap over second. with the run ner u p hon or s event ua lly going to Ben. . So ends th e Ascot IT steep lechases. But tracks and ra cers don't gi ve up easi ly and the re wa e those who were goi ng around sayi ng ma ybe there co u ld be o ne m or e befo re summer's en d , ge t the Vet class in it, etc., etc. And who kn ow s? Onl y Monte Hill , the eve ntual winner in th e J unior class , was ahead of him. Skipper, mean wh ile, was follo wing ano ther Junior rider , Dann y Whi tsett , as he tri ed to keep Bro wn withi n striki ng di stan ce. Before the first lap was over, th ough , Wh itsett had ga lie n by Bro wn , a llo wing the two beg inners to battle for su premacy of their o wn class. At o ne point, the two riders negotiated a steep uphi ll j ump side by side with Bro wn o n th e inside . The inside line of the comer im mediately follo wi ng th e jump was extreme ly slick and it loo ked as th oug h Skipper mi ght make h is move to th e lead as Brown was forced to use that line. Brown was up to th e task, though , a nd held o n to th e lead. not o nly throug h that section. but thr ou !;hout the ho tly co n tested moto. Ro n Burns fin ished the mo to th ird. wit h Tony Ga llegly and Tom Coy rou nd in g o u t the to p five. Bro wn started m o to two in front of Ski p per an d, o nce again . th e two riders clashed th e en tire moto, By the time the second lap was fini sh ed. Sk ipper ' had passed Brown a nd stayed ahea d for two la ps befo re he a nd Brown came up on a lap ped rid er and in the p rocess of ge ll in g by h i m , Brown managed to maneuver his way by Skipper as well to rega in the lead .
