Wh ile the intensity of the battl e among the front riders remained high throughout the moto, the final order remained with Smail the winner, Hart beh ind hi m in second foll owed by Bell . Rounding out the top rive were Don BIScegli a and jason Norton . Hart j umped off to a bike ·length lead as soon as the gat e dropped for the second moto as Smai l and Bell followed him through the first comer. In fourth and pressing was Adam West, who had finished sixth in the first moto. Near the end of the first lap , Bell got extremely sideways exi ting a whoop section and immediately fell off the pace follow ing the in cident. U p front, Smail continued to pressure Hart relentlessly and the two engaged in a rnoto long dogfight. With the moto nearl y half over, Sm ail pa ssed Hart go ing down the back straight, but Hart moved to the insid e on the upcoming sweeper and repassed him. The two riders flew off the large tabletop side by side and then Sma il passed Hart once mor e in the whoops. Wh ile Hart a nd Smail had been doin~ battle up Iroru . Norton had been making hIS move behind them as he passed West and Bell to move int o third. As the riders neared the end of the mo to, it was Norton whoe n ew furthest off the tableto p and held the gas on through th e whoo ps in a final bid to unsettl e th e order of fini sh. Klopp grabbed the lead at the start of the 600cc Expert final from Rob a nd Tom Majeski, Kevin and Mike Varnes and Ken Mohler, and started to pull away as the Majeskis got into a brotherly scra p over second. Tom took second on the second lap, with Mike Varnes slipping behind them for fourth. Mohler went into fifth on the sixth lap, and while the Majeskis were trading second, Varnes shot into the lead as they started the final lap. This woke up Rob more than Tom as he managed to slip by Varnes for second at the nag. The Varnes returned later and jumped way in front of the 250cc Expert final as they traded the lead back-and-forth on their Penn State Cycles-sponsored Yamahas. Mike took the lead as they started the final lap and he knew Kevin would try inside so he held a tight inside line. Kevin tried to go under him but ran out of room. After two successive starts saw all the riders in the Senior class take turns fall ing in the first turn, the class finally started with Ben Machamer putting the Protofab Yamaha in front of Steve Heiser, joe Heberling and joe Gately. Gately fell as he entered the third tum and Heberling's Yamaha blew oil as they came off the second turn on the second lap. The race came down to the p'?wer of Machamer's 600 against Heiser's ability to ride the turns. Machamer would pull away as they left the turns, only to have Heiser rega in the lost ground in the turns. This went the entire eight-lap distance with Machamer holding on to win by three lengths. Several days of rain prior to the race and a threat of rain on race day kept many of the classes down in attendance. The Hackman family took advantage of Mike Hacker's PORTLAND, OR, AUG. 2 Lance Smail sailed to viciory in the highly competitive 125cc Pro class at the Motocross Northwest event at Portland fnternational Raceway. Grayson Hart grabbed the holeshot in moto one followed closely by Smail and Mike Bell. In a sharp corner leading to a downhill, Smail forced hIS way to the inside of Hart and I:"t by. Hart didn't let the pass discourage hIm, though, and kept the pressure on the Suzuki rider as they charged through a series of jumps on the backstretch. A few laps into the race Smail bobbled headinl: up a hill and both Hart and Bell closed ID. At the top of the hill Bell tried an inside move on Hart, but Hart held him off W/P/W : I.
