There were two hea t races to decide which o f th e faster racers would occ u p y the front row in th e II-man fin a l. H eat on e winner Allon McBeea nd h is Gilroy based Honda was the first to mak e a choice at sta rt. position in th e 20-lap final and second heat winner Iwanaga was th e seco nd ma n to select a start slot , At the green light to start th e main the quickest refl exes a nd the choice po sition yielded a slig ht lead for McBee a nd [or Iwanaga there was pl enty o f bu mping to push h im to about fourth com ing o ut of the second corner. At abou t three laps into the final McBee lost the fro n t end in tur n two and wen t dow n easy. but was up 'l.uickly in to a bou t mid -pack. At the sa me urn e Iwanaga had gai ned seco nd p lace a nd was qu ick to in he rit the lead vacated by McBee. On lap six Rob Damron and h is two-str oke Yam aha fo und the line around a ll those who go t a better start and ga ined second behind Iwanaga . When the checkers came o ut it was Iwanaga and h is L ee Racing/Gilroy H onda/Rodriquez Raci ngsponso red Honda that captured first place. Damron picked up second and revitalized J on Nunez on a Ro tax pi cked up th ird . In Ama teu r acti on th e ho nors were shared by Dan H art and Lonnie Paul ey aseach earned a first and a th ird in fina ls acti on . For Hart it was a first in both 250 and 500ec hea t race ac tio n but he ended the even ing with a first in th e 500cc Ju ni or fin al o n h is large Kawasak i mo u nt and a th ird in the 250cc J u n ior fin al o n the sma ll Kawasak i. Pauley rod e very well in th e 250cc J u n ior fin al to ta ke th e wi n away . from Hart .
