Bell Helm ets, and his parents Bob and And y, passed runner-up Speedy Kell on the fourth of 15 laps and went on to win by the length of th e front stra ig h ta way. Kel l, wh o li sts h is spo nsors as Baker Racing, Arai , Maxima Oils. and Action Cycles. was pressured at th e end by Jason Fletcher but h eld on to take second with Fletcher third -a n d Jay Skidmore fourth. . Buchanan had it a bit easier. leading all the way for the uncontested victory on his Randy Buchanan / Yamaha of Fli nt/Mike Stauffer H-D 500R. wuliam Adams slid u nder Shawn McNary. exiting the fourth turn on the eighth of ten laps to take the second spo t. McNary holding third with Rob ert Weiss fourth. J Pro-Am T he field of 53 Iirst-year pros ran four heats to q ua lify for the three eigh t· lap semis. Heat wins went to Buch anan. Bill Adams, Kyle Lon g an d -Weiss. whose time of 2 minutes. 10.711 seconds for the six laps was the best of the lo t. The top four in the semis would go into the main with Buchanan taking the first semi easily over Weiss. Bobby Myers was third with -Rick Knuth fou rth. Kyle Long used the low line to take over th e lead on the second lap of the second sem i and forg e on to what would be the fastest win. Michael Butler even tua lly ada p ted the sam e lin e and took second wi th McNary third and J eff Kellemer fourth. The last fou r tra nsfers into the main would be set just past the halfway mark in th e third semi. Bill Bromley and Tom Rotondaro were first and second from th e start of the race, but it wasn 't until the fourth lap that Tony Rulli passed Adams for third place. Rotondaro scratched from the main. moving alternate Scott Barrett into th e final. Buchanan was first off the line. followed by Bromley. McNary. and Bobby Myers. Brom ley had developed a .misfire on the line. however. and gradually faded to an eighth p lace finish. Kyle Long. whose second semi win was the fastest. dropped out on the third lap. By the halfway mark Buchanan had clear sailing an d was unaware of the struggle behind him; McN ary was second wi th Ada ms third. an d Myers four th . but that would all change. Myers went off the groove and fell to sixth and on the eighth lap Adams charged under McNary out of the fourth corner and dow n the fro nt stretch. Q uickly he built an edge he would hold to the flag . . Robert Weiss moved into fourth on
