FE B. 16 Georgie Price and Eric Sassaman each took an Expert cla ss win in the short track ponion 0 1 Trait -Way Speedwa y' s Budweisersponso red 12th Annual Mo to ra ma Arena Ra ces and Speed Show held in the co nfi nes o f the Sta te Farm Sh ow Arena. Pri ce took th e 250cc A class alter a heated battle with Sco tt Sa unders and Tom Majeski . while Sa ssam an rode hi s fir st race in o ver three seasons and held o ff Majeski 's repeated cha lle nges in th e 600cc class. While the track go t a little rough towards the end . it was a lot beuer than previ ou s races here. tha nk s to the wor k that District 6 MX referee Rod Yentzer and his eq ui pment did. Saunders he ld a precarious lead over Mike Varnes. Robert Miller. Pri ce and h is u ncle Bob Sweeten as the rig h tl y-b unched pack 01 250cc Experts screa med into the lirst tum. H e star ted to wo rk th e outside and took the lea d com ing off th e fourth tum at the end of th e six th lap a nd pulled a lew len gth s in th e closing la ps. Sassa ma n , who co mpeted as a pr o expert before sto p pi ng for personal reasons three years ago. sho wed no sig ns o f rust as he put hi s " Parts Bin Special" Yamaha TT500 in fro n t of Maje ski, Varnes, Price, Sweeten and Duane Veeder in th e 600cc Ex pert class. After a few la ps Sassa ma n and Maj eski had put a few lengths o n a hotly co n tes ted battle lor third. Sweeten moved pa st Price and sta rted to cha llenge Varnes. In th e last stages. Veeder wor ked h IS way past Price and Sweeten to claim lo urth. Although he di d n' t win the 600cc class for th e th ird straight time, Veeder came right ba ck in the next event. the Senior class . to easi ly win over j ohn Bower and Mar k Bu r kho lder . In th e 60cc class J oshua Demuth took th e lead from john Wlrtsett, Brod y Miller and Arron Creamer. Miller shot in to th e lead o n th e third lap, while Winsett pressured Demuth fo second. linally passing him on th e outside as ,they entered the third tum o ne lap from th c;end. The 80s put o n their usual close, hardfought race as Mike H acker grabbed the lead from Roy Mill er and a trio of th e Winsett cousins, Todd. j ohn and Ricky. Todd took second o n th e third lap, with Ricky ta ki ng fourth. H acker kept T odd a lew len gths ba ck to the n ag, wh ile Ricky took o ver third lat e in the race. Roy Miller and Randy Shank pulled a lew lengths in lron t o f Rober t Miller, Mik e H acker a nd the rest of th e 200cc cla ss. Wit h Mill er doing an excellent job of h ugging th e in side, Shan k had to try th e outside line, pulli ng besi de a nd occasio na ll y in front severa l ti mes befo re p uttin g hi s T rans-Am Cycles Kawa sak i in front lor good as they received th e twolaps-left signa l. Dennis Au ngst loo ked like he was goi ng to repeat h is 250cc B clas s win 01 th e previous year as h e g r ab bed th e lea d lrom jim Haldema n, Ken Hackman and Ken Reese. Bu t Haldema n put hi s Mai co in front as th ey began the th ird lap and went o n to win . After two restarts. Guy Stuart and j am ie Pujol took advantage of being the o nly two on th e front ro w o f th e 600cc Amateur fin al as th ey quickly j umped in front of Tom H an n u m and Ken Hackman. Phil Libhart started slici ng through the pack Irom h is spot o n th e penalty li ne . moving into a clo se battle for th ird by th e fo urth la p. Pujol shot under St uart as they en tered the first turn, just as St uart go t a little crossed up. T hey touched. but neither fell . H e had to fight 011 continuous pressure by Ro bb ie Campbell 's Honda in the Iirst rnot o , while the aggression was applied by David Farris o n a KT M in th e second m oto, Todd H u ffsteu ler represented th e team in the Unlimited class after moving to a 125 following the previous year's victory in the Senior Mini Ten nessee Championship. Two poor starts net ted h im only sixth a nd ninth p lace finishes, respectively. Tim Marlo w on a Kawasaki. took the first moio victory. while Shane j enkins rod e his Kawasaki to a second mo ta wi n. The m ost im p ressive ride of the day went to j eH Dod gen in th e 250cc class. Dod gen took the early lead in th e Iast-paced first moto and rod e 10 th e chec kered Flag u nc ha llenged, p ract ically lap ping the enure field, In th e seco nd rnot o , Dod gen again got a good start, bu t th is time Mike Duncan on a borrowed Kawasaki got a way with the holesh o t, H e bui lt about 30 seconds o n h is peers. as Dod gen was fig hting 011 th e strong p ass a tte mpts 01 H onda-m ounted Bill y Adk ins. Dod gen held o nto seco nd at the end, wh ich was good for the overall , but was never able to con test th e lead in th e rno to , a s he had ridden th e race with a fiat rea r tire since th e fir st lap.
