Barbacovi, Sulek battle at LACR Motocross By Terry Rezek PALMDALE, CA. FEB. II T ony Sulek a nd Jdf Barbacovi waged a pri vate baule in the Pro even t at today's CRC motocross at LA. County Raceway. Barbacovi, the only 125cc Pro class rider, was righ t behind th e 250 of Ron Meyer as they en tered th e first tum but he was m th e lead when th ey came out of tum two . Befor e th e first lap was over, Sulek had moved up to a clo se second and was pushin g Barb acovi into som e frenzied riding. The two quickly put several seco nds on Meyer. who was now bade in third. To keep h is 125ahead, Barbacovi had to keep the speed up and was taking the sweepers as high as he could, trying to " ride the rail. " He went too h igh and bogged momentarily. He was back ul' to speed quidely but Sulek had pulled alongside and used the 250' s top end to power by in the next straight, Barbacovi stayed with Sulek for the next four laps and. when Sulek bobbled just a bit in the home straight, he squeaked by for the lead Barbacovi hold that lead to finish th e moto as lead pro. Sulek easily won the 250cc Pro class. Barbacovi was on ce again beh ind Meyer at th e stan of moto two and lOOk th e lead by th e middle of th e first lap. Sulek came off th e lin e las t and ha d to fight h is wa y u p th rough some very fast traffic. Brad McUod, who had finished second 250cc Pro in mo to o ne . was leading the 250ccclass and was close 10 Barbacovi. By lap three, Sulek was up to second Barbacovi was still ha ving problems wi th those soft berms a nd both McUod and Su lek go t p3SL McUod and Sulek went a t it for six laps. Sulek finally got th e lead at th e stan of la p II and quidely pulled away to win with a three-second edge two laps la ter. eamin~ top pro money. James Biro got th e holesho t in mo to o ne of the 250cc Beginner d ivi sion two race with T im McAdams right beh ind. McAdams was a ll over Biro, but appeared a liule gun-shy of the faster ins ide line. He finally go t pa st Biro near the end of lap ei~ht and pulled away to win the molO while Buo slipped to third behind James Baumgarten. Mota two was almost a repea t as McAdams cha sed Biro for th e en tire race. Carl Renezader showed up at the last minute and took second away from McAdams with less than a quarter hip to go to th e ch eckered. The four-ti me Wo men' s Florida Trail Riders class cha m pio n bega n to pick off the Vintage riders and closed th e gap on th e vintage leader a nd pa ssed him befor e the halfwa y point of the race. Rewis won the race wi th a romfo rtable lead. T he O pen Money class also had to dea l wit h th e sli my clay-sand co nd itio ns.
