Mike Metzger took the overall .victory in the BOcc Intermediate class with 2-1 moto finishes and just missed taking the series title as well. Metzger, Nishimura top Sunrise Trans-Cal MX Finale By Donn Maeda ADELANTO, CA, ocr. I More than 300 riders showed up for the final round of the Dodge Trucks/CMC TransCal Series held at Sunrise Cycle Park, and Sunday's race saw Mike Metzger and Darin Nishimura top the 80cc Intermediate and 250cc Beginner . I hjl h c I asses, respecnve y, W 1 e t e Morgan brothers teamed up to dominate the popular Pee Wee class. Metzger entered the final round of th<; series only a few points beh!nd pomts leader Casey johnson, hoping to overtake the Kawasaki nder and score the 80cc Intermediate title. Although the SCR/MNFX/Bill's Pipes/JT Racing/Enzo Racingsponsored Metzger failed to take the series, he did claim the day's overall win via a set of 2-1 moto scores. While first place trophies are nothing new to Metzger. rNishimura entered round eight with hopes of scoring his first overall victory. The Suspension by Jake rider did just that and swept both motos to claim the overall in the 250cc Beginner class. Brandon and Brian Morgan made th eir trek from Diamond Bar worthwh ile, as their father watched his boys swee p the Pee Wee class. Although neither of th e Morgans jumped out to good starts, they both emerged from the pack to post 1-2 scores in both motos. Casey Johnson screamed through the first tum ahead of Jason DePatto, Metzger and Brian Teete in the first 80cc Intermediate moto. As the pack began lap two, Metzger pinned it off a drop-off and sailed past DePatto for second place. While Metzger chased after Johnson, Rusty Holland weaved through the pack after a poor . start and stuffed his way past Teete. Once into fourth, Holland began to pressure DePatto for third, chased the Honda rider for a few laps, and on lap five jumped past on the front tabletop. Holland tried to catch the leaders, but Johnson and Metzger were too far gone. Metzger chiseled away at Johnson's lead, but ran out of time and Johnson took the win. Metzger timed the gate perfectly and stole the second moto holeshot, with DePatto, Teete and Johnson a . few bike lengths behind. With an open track ahead of him, Metzger pulled away from the other nine riders. Teete bounced past DePatto in the whoop section and took over the runner-up position, then Johnson passed DePatto in the same whoop section a lap later and began to pressuree Teete. On lap four Johnson railed around the outside of Teete exiting a sandy tum, taking over second place. Johnson tried to make time on Metzger, but the SCR pilot rode a steady race and maintained his IO-second lead to the finish. Brent Holloway powered his Yamaha through the first tum ahead . of the pack in the first 250cc Beginner class rnoto, but Darin Nishimura out-braked the leader in the next tum. Also on the move was Suzuki mounted Jeff Lokker, who charged into fourth on the third lap then slid past Halloway for third. Lokker then began to nudge Keith Mayes for second, but lost his front end on a muddy straight and dropped to ninth. Mayes then reeled in Nishimura, and the duo engaged in a battle that would carry them to the finish. At the checkers it was Nishimura on top, with Mayes , Holloway and Weberling in tow. Mayes pulled a clean holeshot in moto two, but snapping at his muffler were Tom Johnson, J.B. Baiunco and Lokker. Mayes pulled away, while tring to sneak inside Baiunco. The two made contact, but Lokker came out ahead while Baiunco lost control and high-sided his Husqvama. As Mayes continued to pad his lead, Nishimura was busy making up for a bad start and bounced past Lokker in the whoops on lap four then set his sights on Johnson. He jumped past Johnson on the next lap, and set after Mayes. Not even Mayes' huge lead could deny Nishimura's charge as the Honda rider reeled him in and railed around the outside of the last tum to take the lead. An elated Nishimura crossed the finish line just ahead of Mayes, Johnson and Lokker. Brian Husjey holeshot the first Pee Wee moto, but shadowing him were Ian Igercic, Brandon Morgan and Shad Viens. Viens buzzed into the lead and led the field around the track for lap two . Brandon Morgan motored around Igercic in a rocky tum then set after Viens. Brian Morgan was also on the move, and took third on the third lap. The Morgan boys began to look for a way around Igercic, but scooted by when Igercic went down in a slippery tum. Brandon took the checkers ahead of Brian, Daniel Blair and a recovered Viens. Tanya Faulker holeshot the second moto ahead of Jimmy Stewart, Brian Morgan and Brandon Morgan. Brian Morgan whizzed by Stewart and Faulkner on the third lap and took over the lead. Brandon followed suit and chased down Stewart and Faulkner, moving himself into second. Brandon then began to pressure his brother, and scooted by in the far tum. Brandon crossed . the finish just ahead of brother Brian, Stewart and Daniel Blair. Rob Lawrence stole the start of the . first 125cc Junior class moto, but breathing down his jersey were David Casada, Travis Fleming and Chad Doggett. Lawrence sputtered to a halt on lap two , handing the lead to Casada. Michael Stanton worked his way into second on the fifth lap and pressured Casada for
