SEPT. 6 Dustin Evan s won both th e Amat eur Stock a nd Am at eur Modified classes a nd Lisa Peterson did th e sa me i n th e Women 's Stoc k and Modified classes a t th e Yamaha /N MA YSR50 World Cha m pions h ips at Ball y's Hotel. • Heat o ne of the Lightweight (up to 160 po u nds) Beginner Stock class saw Kenn y Roberts. Jr. lead flag-to-fl ag. Beh ind h im . Yui chi Furukawa passed Todd Hessling 10 tak e o ver second. J ak e Zemke was moving up th rough the pack and soo n passed Hessling to ta ke o ver third. Rober ts took the win with Furukaw a a close second and Zem ke hold in g o n to third. Furukawa go t th e ho leshot in heat two with Robe rts and Zem ke close beh ind. Furukawa and Roberts excha nged the lead several times with Rob erts finally co mi ng o u t o n top at th e flag . Zemke sli p ped under Furukawa on th e lasi lap to tak e seco nd with Furukawa th ird . . Lisa Peterson dominated both th e Stock and Modified classes for th e wo men with th e ra cing co m ing fro m T eri Bil erback a nd Audrey Men ar ik for seco nd. In heat o ne of the Ama teur Stock class, Evans was firSl off the lin e wit h Peterson a nd Brad Kind hart close behind . Evans slowly pulled awa y as Peterso n and Kind hart ra ced for second . Rob er t Du ran m ove d up to cha lleng e Ki ndhart. bu t the pair 'ta ngled in a corner a nd crashed. Peterso n a lso got caught up in th e cra sh bu t kept her bike up. Travis Kin g used the pi leup to hi s adva nt:lge a nd slip ped b y to mov e into second. Peterso n rode hard to catch Ki ng. but to no a vai l as the chec kered flag ca me o ut . Evans took th e win with King fin ishing seco nd and Peterson third. Billy Hamill (left) won the Scratch main at Inland Motorcycle Speedway but finished th ird at AscQt . Evans again pu lled the hol eshot in heat two, but th is tim e Du ran and Jim Henn were th e battle for second wit h Peterson a bik e len gth behind. They finis hed th e sam e wa y th ey sta rted -Eva ns, Duran. a nd King. The overa ll win went to Evans, with Dura n seco nd and Pet erson , scor in g a blow fo r th e gi rls. finishi ng third. The Pro Stoc k cla ss sa w Ku rt Hen ricksen jump 10 an ear ly lead . Chris Broa den and Bryan Sm ith wer e close off th e star t, bUI H enricksen pulled aw ay quickly and bega n 10 stretch o UI a Ion!; lead. Cave Trager get a poor sta rt. but within three laps passed bo th Smith and Broad ers 10 ta ke over second place. Trager was slo wly catching Hen ricksen . but hi. lead was too long. H en ricksen crossed the li ne firs t foll owed by Trager and Broa derrs. Heat two was a repeat of heat o ne as H en ri cksen pulled away ear ly and Trager pla yed catch- u p. Trager got caugh t in lapped tra ffic and th e race ended, The finishing o rder wa s the sa me..: Henri ck sen , Trager and Broaden. . During th e mandatory tear-down o f th e winners' bik es. Lucero delivered the k nock-ou l blow but Hamill was awarded the victory in th e red flag·sho rten ed Scratch ma in . The Ham ill / Lucero war started at Costa Mesa in J ul y, when H am ill was lead ing a Scratch mai n a nd Lucero kn ocked h im do wn. One month la ler. Lu cero was leading the Na tional qualifier ma in at Speedway USA, wh en H am Ill knocked him down in the last turn . On Wednesday, th ey brought the ro ugh and-Ium ble sho w to IMS. Bob by Schwartz beat Lucero off th e lin e to sta rt th e mai n even t, bu t L ucero. wi th a big drive. took Schwartz wide in tu m two and put his Godden into th e lead. By the time the first circuit ended. Hamill had disposed of Schwartz and poked his fro n t tire a few inches ahead of L ucero . Lu cero pu lled even with th e hard-riding teenager in turn o ne o n the seco nd la p. As the y ca me o rr tum two. Ham ill got a better drive in the cushion and pushed Lucero back 10 seco nd. L ucero sta yed clo se to Ham ill as they ended th e lap and that set th e stage for th e lap-three firewor ks. Gomg dow n th e back chute. Lu cero began to reel in Ha mill . and he went into the tu m mu ch harder tha n Ham il l. It became apparent 10 Lucero that he was goi ng to drill his young opponen t, Lucero tried 10 slow it down by backing it in as hard as he could . bUI it was 100 lat e he tagged the leader. wh o went sa iling 0[[ th e Monrovia Diesel/ G reat White Limousin e/STP / Bieffe/Mesa Muffl er sponso red Weslake. Schwartz tried to steer through the tangle of bodies and bik es. bUI he had 10 la y it down. The end result was a good bell-ringing for Hamill. Sch wartz was momentarily sha ken wh ile Lu cero ripped ope n th e sea t of h is leathers and lost som e hide off h is rear end. The referee threw Lucero ou t for the cra sh . g iving th e victory to Hamill. Sch wartz too k th ird with Mike Faria fourth. SEPT. 14 Popular P hil Collins recorded his seco nd double win of th e season when he wo n th e Scratch and Handicap ma in s at Chris Aga ja n ia n 's Ascot South Bay Stadium. Collins, win ner of five o f his six TaCO o n the night, was seco nd off th e lin e at the start of th e Scra tch mai n. Pole-si tter Bill y "The Bul let" Hamill set the initial tem po. Third off the start was National Cha mpion Steve Lucero. Bobby Schwartz. the fourth starter. had a lready been kicked out by referee Dave Sim s for breaki ng the tapes. Hamill, using a wom~ out Barr u m rear tire w hile the competi tors had new Kend as, had a short visit to th e va nguard pos itio n. Fast riding Collins rod e around him for the lead as th ey shot off tum two th e first ti me. Weslake-riding Ha mill ha d a shorter sta y in the seco nd · p lace spot. O ne second after Collins wmt by o n the o u tside. Lu cero flew u nd er him down low. On lap three, ScOIl Bra nt went dow n in tum two and suffered a knee in jury. Lucero and northern California Ch ampion J im Sisemore took Jordan on la p fo ur.
