COSTA MESA, CA, SEPT. 15
National Champion Steve Lucero began

the Scratc h main on Los Ange les Ram Nig ht
at the Orange County Fairgrounds. J oim ng
Lu cero in victory circle was form er Nationa l
Champion Bobby Schwartz, who won the
eight-lap Handicap main for the secon d time
this season .
Lucero came into the mai n event winless
in his prel iminaries. Whe n referee Irwi n
Moon tripped the tapes L ucero pushed the
Coors Light/Epic Surf & Skate /Shoei/Hog
Wash /Oilzall/O' Neal USA Godden into first
from his po le pos ition. Hamill was second
off the line, foll owed by Schwartz and Steve
Ru ssell, who was com petin g his first -ever
Scratch main a t the famous facility.
Hamill looked inside of Schwartz on lap
on e, but the clever veteran wou ld not give him
an in ch , and while the duo locked horns for
second , Lu cero began . to p ull away . The
defending champ moved away all the way to
the checkered flag, as Schwartz stayed tough
and fou ght off all of Ham ill 's advances for
second .
The Handicap main looked to be the private
property of Don Odom from the start. The
lanky Redondo Beach ride r took the lead an d
held off veteran Andy Northrup over the first
two laps. On the third circuit , Odorn, also
known as "Too Tall" , pulled away and built
up a large lead .
Northrup found himself battling with the
Iierce-riding Hamill on lap three. Northrup
held his own until la p four when Hamill and
Schwartz sandwiched h im at the end of the
circui t. A few seconds lat er, .Alan "Crazy"
Christian also got by, but his Jawa motor
broke and he pu lled ou t.
After disposing of Northrup, Schwartz and
Hamill cha rged the leader. Schwartz got inside
him at the end of the sixth revolutio n. When
they slid into turn on e on lap seven, Schwartz
gave Odom a big taste of his front tire and
knocked him ou t of the way. By the time
Od om recovered, he had dropped out of
con ten tio n . Less than two laps la ter. Schwartz
took the CTI Brace/Prom oti on Products/
KNAC /Russel l's Grandstands/Budweiser spo nso red Weslak e under the wi nner' s flag .
Hamill a!;ain finished behind Schwartz with
Lucero thud.
Early leader Odom fell in turn one on the
last lap. His shoulder popped ou t of the
socket, but he was able to walk to the in field.
Reserve rider Martie Wells rode the Medieval Times Weslake to the win in the Division
Two main . Veteran Mark Milazzo fin ished
second . In Third Division, Mark DeVay rod e
a Weslake to the trophy. In the wild Sidecar
main , Steve Stanton and Tom Tufts beat Craig
Dempster and Peter Lewis across the lin e.
