This was only th e second time Coolbeth has no t won a ll season. The winner of th e 250cc Amat eur cla ss was Bob Gene, who a lso wo n the Open Amateur class 10 be come a double New York S tate Champion. Van den Berk swept into th e lead before the end of the first lap a nd bu ilt up a healt h y lead befor e Geboer s co uld get th rough to second , bu t the rid e of the race was th at of Strijbos . . Bau li ng throu gh from a medi ocr e start . Strijbos survi ved a n horrific inci dent o n the th ird lap as Mar cel Van Drunen cras hed right in fro n t of him and actua lly fell into the path of the Suzu ki sta r wh o was un abl e to take a ny av oiding ac tio n as he was a lrea d y airborne. In credibl y. Stri jbos avoided joini ng his fellow Dutchman o n th e ground a fter lan ding o n hi s pros tra te bod y, a nd even more in credibly. Van Dru nen rejo ined the race a fter a o ne la p pa use (0 rega in his composure . Strijbos rod e arou nd Ge boers at 3/ 4-race distance and closed relentlessly o n Van de n Berk but time ran ou t wi th h im just a few meters behi nd th ro ugh o ut the fina l lap . The demanding track claimed innumera ble star victims during th e final. American Mike Heal ey _was the fi rst fro nt-run ner to be elim inated a fter a cras h wh ile sixth , and a nother American, Bill y Liles wen t dow n in the whoops after in he riting the position followi ng a hard ba ili e with Georges Jobe.
