Michael Green " I just cut the strings on the bales up by the cushion," said Harley-Davidson factory team member Chris Carr after he won the Orrville Hal£ Mile at Buckeye Speedway. " I had trouble finding out what was going to work, so I went back to what worked in the heat race - the outside. " Carr and runner-up Steve Aseltine had just given the crowd a demonstration of how to ride a 600cc motorcycle on the fast three-eighths mile oval. Dan Ingram, aboard the Sponseller Racing 750cc Honda, had to settle for third beh ind the " little" bikes. Hawaii's Kris Kiser topped the junior fina l and T ony Donahue was victorious in the Pro-Am main at th e event whi ch was promoted by Freedom Harl ey-Davidson of Massillon, Ohio. Sponseller Racing's Steve Morehead, a multi-time winner at Buckeye Speedway, set fast tim e at 20.317 seconds. Ingram was next at 20.470. Carr and Will Davis were the only other racers to drop into the 20second bracket at 20.707 and 20.749, respectively. Mike Hale was the quickest junior J~ time trials, turning in a 21.016second lap. Kiser, James Hart and Brian Tillson were within threetenths of a second of Hale. The first Expert heat was won by Aseltine with a closing Morehead second, Don Estep third and Scott Stump fourth. Randy Texter finished fifth and- would be the first alternate for the main as the heat would be the fastest of the three run. Martin LaVoie pulled the holeshot at the start of the second heat, but Dan Ingram took over the lead for good on lap two. LaVoie faded and Chance Darling, Garth Brow and Erick Graybeal took the next three spots to advance to the main. The third and final heat proved to be the most interesting. Buckeye Speedway has no containment barriers on the outside of turns one and two or the back straightaway. It 's possible for a 'rider to go over the . top in the turns and reenter the track on the back straigh t. And that's exact ly what Carr did. The 600 National Champion got in to the firs t tum too ho t and found himsel£ in eighth place wh en he cam e back on the track along the back straigh t. " I went deer hunting for a while," said Carr after the race. After hi s off-trac k excursion, Carr ' treated the crowd to a demonstration of just how fast he could rid e hi s 600 Harley-Davidson. After one lap he was in th ird beh ind George Roeder and Steve Burkholder. Roeder proved harder to put away than some of the other racers Carr passed on his way to the front. The Monroeville, Ohio, pilot stayed with Carr for two laps, but on the white flag lap Carr put Roeder awa y and set off after Burkholder. Carr's impressive charge yielded a victory by a bike length over Burkholder at the finish line. Junior heats were won by Hale, Tillson and Kiser. Kiser's heat was the fastest. Pro-Am qualifying heats wer e won by Steve 'Beattie, Kyle Long, Harold Dorsey and Greg Sims. As the Expert ·main event was being staged, Roeder discovered his Harley had a flat tire. He went on the two-minute clock and the drama mounted. Alternate T exter fired up his XR750 and waited. The change couldn't be completed in the allotted tim e and the referee Russ Collar waved Texter into the ma in just as Roeder took his place on the grid. Collar ordered Roeder off the track, . much to his and the partisan crowd's disappointment. The main started with Morehead and Ingram up front with the field close behind. Carr and Aseltine diced and closed on the Sponseller Racing teammates. Ingram got by Morehead and on the sixth lap Carr and Aseltine moved around Morehead and set off after Ingram. On lap seven, Ingram was the meat in the 600cc sandwich as Carr went high and Aseltine low to pass him in tum two. Aseltine gave it his best shot, but the Canadian couldn't get by Carr and the win went to the Harley-Davidson/ Arai /Hap Jones/ TsubakiiTakai / Alpinestars / Sunoco Racing Fue1slWorks Perfor-
