"T h is has been th e easiest wee kend in 20 yea rs or' raci ng, " said a n ex u bera nt Sch losse r. "We had no p robl ems . . . it was a p erfe ct race for us," com me nted Quarterley. T he Quan erl ey/H art h pairing turned i 2 la ps o f the 14-turn , fourmile circu it, co m p leting th e 288- m ile dis tance a t a n average speed o f 95.544 mph and winning by a m argin of 22.04 seconds over defen ding series cha m p io ns H ype r-Cycle. The win g ives Dutchman a :s tpoint lead in the sta ndings o ver H yper-Cycle, 91 to 60. H ype r-C ycle had a hard time o f it, recovering [rom a serio us injury to th ei r number o ne rid er, James Doma y. Doma y, wh o recentl y returned to racing foll owing knee surgery , fell in p racti ce on Friday , hitting th e Arm co o ut side of h igh-speed turn II a nd breaking a vertebra in hi s neck. He wa s fortunate n ot to be paralyzed , a nd will hav e to wear a halo-type bra ce for three to six months. Toomer now h as a firm lead in th e GTU po int sta nd ings, 89 to 52, ove r th e defendin g GTU cha m pions, Ro swell H onda's Cam Roos a nd Ste p he n Matthews, wh o finished seco n d today. The top three GTU teams all rode Yamaha FZR600s. T he primary co nce rn of th e en d u ra n ce teams co m pe tin g at ultra-fast Road Am eri ca was not tir es as many wo u ld have expec ted, but rath er fro n t brake pads, which ar e subjec ted to excess ive wear due to th e p rolifera tio n o f long stra ig h ta ways follow ed by tight corners. T he savvi er teams suc h as Dutch man a nd H yper-Cycle fill ed thick , end ura nce -style br ake p ads a nd h ardco mpou nd raci ng slicks, but even with th ose. many co mpla ined tha t th ey ra n o u t o f br ak es n ear the end of th e race. Keystone Ra cing 's Dieter Lane took th e lead a t th e sta rt on th e G eorge Fills-prepared GSXRIIOO. but on lap two was passed by Ri ch ard Arnai z o n th e ul tra -potent Mo to r Sport Yamaha FZRI OOO. Arnaiz set a bli sterin g p ace whi ch h is fello w co mpeti tors felt would never last, turning co ns istent laps in th e 2:26 to 2:28 ran ge with a n unoffi cial best o f 2:25.97. In pan Arn aiz ' critics were ri ght, as th e Motor Sport e ffo rt enco u n te re d problems along th e way. First, AMA o fficia ls noticed that th e rear brake Slay a rm wa s hanging, and ca lled Arna iz' teammate Ph il Kress into th e pits just two laps into hi s stint. Tuner Theo Lockwood performed a NASCAR-like pit stop, sending Kress ba ck into th e race in just over a minute. Then later, with Arnaiz ba ck in th e sadd le, a main bearing failed, en d ing th eir da y. Sin ce th ey'd co m p leted 59 laps, th ey were cred ited with 13th in class a nd 28th overa ll. Dutchman ' s Quanerl e y h eld seco nd ea rly o n. ac tua lly passing Arnaiz o nce d uri ng th e first halfhour whe n he was forced off the tra ck by lapped traffic. And th o ugh Arnaiz turned u p the wic k a nd retook th e lead , D ut ch man 'was able to pass Mo tor Sport durin g th eir eme rge ncy pit sto p a nd were never head ed. H yp er -Cycle's Farmer began th e race back in seventh place, slow ly wearing in th e hard -compound Mi ch elin tir es, but got up to speed a n d moved into seco nd past Lane' s Keystone teammate Ri ck y" Orlando o n lap 33. Both teams had pitted together , but Hyper-Cycle' s quicker sto p allowed them to close the gap. The Keystone crew was experienci ng th e same misfire that p lagued them th e previous weekend at Loudon, a nd would so ld ier on to a fourthplace finish. Dutchman II ran fourth during the ea rl y going, foll ow ed by th e Rough Stock Ra cing All -Stars with Randy Renfrow a nd J ohn Ashmead riding
