Tom Ehmke jetted out in fro nt of the second 250cc moto, pos ting th e th ird fastest 'time, wi th Tim Ewert, J erry Schockmel, and Ma rty Walden in tow. The du st made a ll but the most heroic of passes impossibl e. Hough exploded o££ the start of th e third 250cc moto wi th Suzuki pilots Ro n Lawson a nd J im Norris battling fierce ly over se cond. Lyngar 's Yamah a failed to fire on the first kick bu t he man aged to get by KT Mmou nted Dee Taylor. As H o ug h ex tend ed hi s lead. L ynga r blitzed through the du st catch ing up to th e . wi ld melee be tween Lawso n a nd Norris, whi ch ended when Norris fell in a hea p crossing a ditch. Lyn gar the n keyed a pass on Law son and set off to chase after Hough. While Lyngar ma naged to pick u p a second here a nd th ere, Ho ug h was in con trol o f th e mo to win as well as the event's overall victor y. Nielsen lau nched hi s 500cc Kawasaki off th e li ne to lead Bertram , Dra fs, Bean, J o h n Mood y and Brown. Bert ra m hung tough wit h Nie lsen for a co u p le lap s, then faded ba ck. J ohn Nielsen f inished third overall and took second p lace in the Open class behind Bertram. Nielsen had the fastest MX special t est ti m e. " I co uld o nly see abo u t three bike lengths a head of me ," Bert ra m said. The positions remained co nstant to th e fini sh , excep t for Bro wn who sn uc k by Mood y. In co m pa rision, Nielsen had the fastest motocross sco re of 735, whi le Bertram was fou rt h fastest with a sco re of 763. Brown's ti me o f 835 bro ke the tie wi th L yn gar for fou rt h o vera ll , placi ng him in fifth. . Mounted on his Husky th u m per, Rh odes co llected th e final mot o win with the fifth fastes t tim e over Lew is, Joh n May , Ca rl Mac kwicz an d Gary Neese. Many o f the riders exp ressed their appreciation at the factory su p port th at th e Kawas kai a nd Yamaha tech nicians provided a t thi s qualifier a nd commented on the positive effec ts of th eir invol vem ent for racing. In looking back at this year's qual ifier ser ies, Suzuki 's Bert ra m co m mented, " It 's th e best seri es that I' ve ridden.
