back. Tim Hodes held second for four laps then was passed by Terry Tinney. Hodes powered his Honda to the lead in moto two until lap two when Schellenberger passed him. On lap six Tinney made his move on Hodes for second. The overall for the day went to Schellenberger, second lo Tinney and third lO Hodes. In malo one of the l25cc Expert class Schellenberger had his work CUl oUl for him as Hodes held the lead untif lap six. Schellenberger forced Hodes OUl of a berm JUSl before the finish line. This allowed Tinney and Brell Shumale lO pass Hodes lOO. MalO lWO brought Shumale OUl from followed by Hodes and Clay Branch. Runrting in fourth Schellenberger was on the gas and passed Branch before lap four, then sel his sights on Hodes and passed him on the lasl lap. Time ran oUl and Schellenberger had to selue for second behind Shumale. With a J2 finish Schellenberger took firsl overall, Shumale second with a 3-1 score and Tinney third with a 2-4. DoIIansky's day at Spring ~reek MX By Rolfe Otterness MILLVILLE, MN, A.PR. 30 Troy Dollansky had an oUlslanding day at lhe first Spring Creek Park MOlocross of the '89 season. In the 125cc A class he split wins wilh Pal Riley LO lake a second overall and lhen he lOPped the 250cc A class after balliing wilh Bruce Gales. Olher outstanding riders were Pal Donabo winner 01 the l25cc Youth and 8 divisions and Brandon Backes in the Mini Heavyweight class. Jobn Martin had bis track well prepped for the season debut, but Mother Nalure fouled up the works with excess precipitation during lhe week preceding the race. Cold weather and. expectations of mud lowered rider participation lO around 220, bUl the track shaped up better than expected to provide great racing. Dollansky fired his Anoka Sports Cemer/ Flame Racing backed SuzuknOlo the lead in lhe first l25cc A moLO. Pat Riley dueled him throughOutlhe race to finish second with Eric Meuger and Seou Ruegg rounding out the top four. Tim Bartyllia carved lhrough the sandy lirst turn in the second mota to take the lead. Riley displaced him on 'he second lap while Dollansky moved imo third. Halfway through lhe mOlO, Dollansky mOlored by Bartylla and sel off afler Riley. Dollaoskky gained slowly on Riley over the next lew laps bUl fell shon by four seconds at the £lag. Barlylla held on fOrlhird. Chad Winecke pulled the holshol in the 250<:c A division's first mOlD but Bruce Gales and Dollansky pulled ahead and bauled over the lead for much of the mOlO. Gales held off the challenge of Dollansky Lhroughout lO take the win. Dollansky made a mistake near the end of the mala and finished third behind Winecke. Chris Bense look fourth while Jack Lane put in an impressive ride through the pack for sixth behind Chris Hughes. Wi necke grabbed another holeshol in lhe second mOlO. Gales and Hughes quickly moved imo the first lWo places but Hughes soon dropped OUl wilh a bike problem. Dollansky moved up to challenge Gales and they resumed lheir firsl-moLO ballle. Winecke, Bense, and Lane had a three-way dice going Leif Forsythe (7) leads Aaron Poland (6) at Kinkaid Park MX. over third until Bense £lew past Winecke on the uphill double. Gates slowed somewhat andd Dollansky developed a huge lead. A Sense-Lane confrontation over second developed as lhey overtook Gates late in the moLO. Thomas tops Badgers Dual Euro Scrambles By Donnetta and Bob Murray LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, MAY 13-14The lirst Dual European Scrambles of lhe summe.r season provided exciling races including a desert duel between Cliff Thomas and Dan Smith in the Open bike class on both days of the Badgers MC Mother's Day Cop OUl Dual European Scrambles held in Lucerne Valley. Yamaha pilol Thomas emerged the viclor both days, bUl it was a hard-foughl ballie for the two wins.. Salurday's race saw KTM's milh roaring lhrough home check in the lead wilh Thomas a mere 34 seconds behind him, while Eric Hall~ath on an ATK was wedged belween lhe lWO 10 second place. Mechanical problems forced HaJlgath to throw in the lowel shoruy into the second loop, allowing Thomas quick access to Smith and" pressure for the lead. By the end of the second !"'SS through the deserl, Smilh had strelched hIS lead to a minule-anda-half. BUl Thomas kepl up the chase, in spiLe of the dusl, and had narrowed the distance between the two to eighl seconds when they flew through the chute the lhird lime. Smith's tire started losing air during the fourth - and final - loop. "The air was gelting beal oUl of my lire and my front end washed OUl on me," said Smith. "I crashed and Cliff was righl lhere lO pass me. He was riding really well." Derrick Paiemenllook the third Spol followed by Chris Crandall, bOlh of lhem aboard Kawasakis. Thomas and Smilh provided Sunday's Open race wilh another exciling boul of racing. The duo pushed lhernselves lO the :imil from the Slart and quickly separated from the resl of the field. Thomas grabbed the lead allhe starl with Smilh in bOl pursuit. Thomas finished the firsl of the three-loop course only 18 seconds ahead of Smilh, who never lel up on the pressure throughoul the race. Thomas furiously passed lhrough home check a second time, again only L8 seconds ahead of Smith. He was lO keep the lead through the finish for the win with Smith relegaled to second place. "] gal the lead from the starl, bUl I knew Dan was behind me and if I made a mistake he'd go by," said Thomas al the finish. "I wenl as fasl as I could with no mistakes. He always gal close lo me, bUl I lhink.my dusl pushed him back." Kawasaki rider Keith Loonsfoot took second place in Sunday's 125cc Expert class at the Dual European Scrambles in Lucerne Valley. Paiemem repealed his third place performance of the previous day, followed by Ken Rieger and Jim Clark. Yamaha's Mike Sixbery, on a 250, was a lwo-day winner in the Vel class, but nOl without a challenge [rom Mike McDonald, mounted on a Honda CRSOO. McDonald finished second lO Sixbery in Salurday's race, bUl had a lead on "Sizzling Six" in Sunday's canlest. Sixbery finally caught sighl of McDonald's dusl on lbe last lap of the race, which gave him the drive lO slart pushing il. He passed McDonald lWO miles out in the 10-mile loop and tried lO make a 10l of dusl lO keep McDonald back, bUl McDonald was persislem and the pair diced across the last two miles of desert, with Sixbery finally pulling into the lead to take the checkered flag. Smith was the winner in Salurday's 250cc class, while Randy Moseley, on a Yamaha, took the 250cc win on Sunday. Yamaha's Jimmy Lewis was viclorious in Saturday's 125cc event wiLh Mickell Brix, on a Honda, coming in second. Brix dominaled Sunday's race followed by Keith Loonsfoot, aboard a Kawasaki. The Women's class saw Patrice Payne, on a Honda, take the checkered £lag the firSl day wilh Kawasaki pilol Vicki Howell earning the win on-Sunday. Tommy Roberts on a Yamaha SOcc won the Mini class both days.
