The season opener of AMA speedway racing
at Gold Country fairgrounds gOI off 10 a bang
with Mike Delacy streaking to victory over
John Houston in the Scratch main. Steve
Orlandi began his second season as a Division
1 rider with his firsl-ever Handicap main event
victory.
Delacy, sponsored by Inlerlink/Maier
Manufacluring/Celestial Syslems, pulled the
pole posilion when lhe 101" four riders of lne
nighllined up for lhe premier evenl. HOUSlOn
and Delacy squeezed oul Bob Hicks as they
hil tbe first lurn. Rocky Robinson moved 10
lhe inside to 'avoid lhe lraffic lhen lried 10
pull alongside of Delacy and Houslon going
down the back chule, but Delacy ShUl him
off while keeping an eye on Houslon. Delacy
slill had HouslOn pinned on lhe oUlside as
lhey backed into lurn lhree wbile Robinson
had 10 seule back into lhird.
As lhey dashed 10 the stattlnnish line
Delacy hooked up and pulled jusl ahead of
HOUSlon for lhe lead. Houston lhen followed
Delacy bUl could only gel close enough 10
smell Delacy's exhausl. Robinson gave a run
a' Houston from lhe oUlside on lap three only
to drop back to fourlh behind Bobby Hicks.
Delacy cruised to the win as Houston
followed.
Joe Kelly lOok the early lead in ,he
Handicap main after a I)rief baule with Mark
Day, then tried 10 put as much dislance on
the rest of the pack as possible. Orlandi,
sponsored by Abor Tree Surgery/Orlandi
Concrete/ Al Towing and Bad Rad Dad,
found ,he groove on lap lWO and sel his sights
on Kelly. Curry made it around Joe Leduc
and sel out afler lhe leaders.
With two laps lefl Orlandi was on Kelly's
tail and Curry was closing fasl. Orlandi
grabbed lhe lead from Kelly as lhe while nag
came ouc, only to lose it LO Curry in between
turns one and lWO. Curry, Orlandi and Kelly
went through lhe final lum wheel-lo-wheel,
and as they went three abreast towards the
checkered [lag Orlandi hooked up firsl and
inched in front of Curry with Kelly third.

SIeve Marth moved up 10 lake the Open EXperl
class win at the season-opening short track
at Paradise Speedway.
In the final, Jason Sando gOI the holeshol
and was off 10 an early lead. On the sixth
lap, Chad Groescup, on an Onwio Cycle
Center Honda, tried 10 nose Sando OUl. As
lhe two were bauling, Marth saw his chance.
Marth, on his ShoeilMarlh Farms·sponsored
machine, snuck down on lhe insid~ and n~
by, grabbing the lead. Manh look hom~ the
$100 and his firsl win for the season. Groeseup
look second, and Sando was third.

Jason Krempin look a strong slep loward the
National Amaleur MOlocrosS Championship
al Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, with an
impressive eighl-molo s\Veep of four classes
loday al the Goodtimes MOlor Spon Park of
San Antonio R~gional Qualifier.
Krempin's only serious challenges during
lhe day's aCliviles came in lhe 250cc B
Modified class wbere a strong performance by
Matl Harlan ended in a cash in mOlO one
and from S,even Ralhmann in the second heal.
Rathmann grabbed lhe lead in the second
molO wilh a breathtalting charge belween
Krempin and second-place finisher RUSlY
McDowell. Rathmann was successful in
holding off the advances of Krernpin until
wen into lhe contesl then relinquished first
place when Krempin passed him in midair
over a double jump.
Jerry Benner and Roy Schellenberger
emerged with victories in lWO classes each as
Benner look lhe l25 A and 250cc A Sloclc: wins
and Schellenberger pulled off the feal in lhe
125 and 250cc A Modified classes. Earl Ingram
also looked exceplionally smooth in wresting
'01" honors from Jason Jones and Austin
Taylor, respeclively, in lhe 250cc C Novice
Slock and Modified classes where some of the
closesl racing of the day look place.
James Milchell ovenook P.]. Kerr on lhe
final lap of lhe second mOlO 10 win a closelyfoughl baltle with Kerr and Brandon Witzel
in the 125cc Novice Slock class. Wiuel made
an incredible save in LIle opening heal when
he somehow extracled his chesl from the seal
and regained control of lhe pegs Wilh his feet
during an oUloOf-control foray into rough
terrain just past the first-turn jump.
Michael Lowery made lwO holeshots hold
up in lhe 51cc Slock AUloma,ic class as he
oUldueled Amy Haner and Scou Hickey in
the mud. Shawn Moffeuled a Kawasaki roller
coasler in lhe 65cc Slock class and Brian
Oestrick maslered his compelilors in lhe 85cc

Grand Champion honors, while Lake Cycle's
Rich Scharphorn earned AA High Point
honols al lhe AMA/Dislricl 14 enduro season
opener in Hesperia.

240 riders thaI enlered the evenl.
Brian Lohman kepI the throltle pinned on
his 125cc KTM 10 clinch 101" AA class honors,
while Ken Brown, Brian Woodward and
Duane Hosser also claimed High Poinl
trophies in lheir respective classes. Gale
ESlafon won the Women's class despile having
a wild ride when a tree branch caughl her
throltle cable causing the throltle 10 stick wide
open.

In an experimental Vintage class, Bob
Blackledge, riding a 1981 Husky 430, caplured
the win, bUl he had some problems along the
way. When his bike was parked il was struck
by a car bu' wasn', badly damaged.
