Mike Delacy (left) passed John Houston in the middle of the Scratch main and then held him off for the win at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. Jones AUBURN, CA, MAY. 5 The season opener of AMA speedway racing at Gold Country fairgrounds gOI off 10 a bang with Mike Delacy streaking to victory over John Houston in the Scratch main. Steve Orlandi began his second season as a Division 1 rider with his firsl-ever Handicap main event victory. Delacy, sponsored by Inlerlink/Maier Manufacluring/Celestial Syslems, pulled the pole posilion when lhe 101" four riders of lne nighllined up for lhe premier evenl. HOUSlOn and Delacy squeezed oul Bob Hicks as they hil tbe first lurn. Rocky Robinson moved 10 lhe inside to 'avoid lhe lraffic lhen lried 10 pull alongside of Delacy and Houslon going down the back chule, but Delacy ShUl him off while keeping an eye on Houslon. Delacy slill had HouslOn pinned on lhe oUlside as lhey backed into lurn lhree wbile Robinson had 10 seule back into lhird. As lhey dashed 10 the stattlnnish line Delacy hooked up and pulled jusl ahead of HOUSlon for lhe lead. Houston lhen followed Delacy bUl could only gel close enough 10 smell Delacy's exhausl. Robinson gave a run a' Houston from lhe oUlside on lap three only to drop back to fourlh behind Bobby Hicks. Delacy cruised to the win as Houston followed. Joe Kelly lOok the early lead in ,he Handicap main after a I)rief baule with Mark Day, then tried 10 put as much dislance on the rest of the pack as possible. Orlandi, sponsored by Abor Tree Surgery/Orlandi Concrete/ Al Towing and Bad Rad Dad, found ,he groove on lap lWO and sel his sights on Kelly. Curry made it around Joe Leduc and sel out afler lhe leaders. With two laps lefl Orlandi was on Kelly's tail and Curry was closing fasl. Orlandi grabbed lhe lead from Kelly as lhe while nag came ouc, only to lose it LO Curry in between turns one and lWO. Curry, Orlandi and Kelly went through lhe final lum wheel-lo-wheel, and as they went three abreast towards the checkered [lag Orlandi hooked up firsl and inched in front of Curry with Kelly third. Krempin's only serious challenges during lhe day's aCliviles came in lhe 250cc B Modified class wbere a strong performance by Matl Harlan ended in a cash in mOlO one and from S,even Ralhmann in the second heal. Rathmann grabbed lhe lead in the second molO wilh a breathtalting charge belween Krempin and second-place finisher RUSlY McDowell. Rathmann was successful in holding off the advances of Krernpin until wen into lhe contesl then relinquished first place when Krempin passed him in midair over a double jump.
