That Work, corrupter of our dream of the endless ride, of perennial escape, canceled my weekend flight. It was Saturday morning, I was all set to roll; I knew where I was headed, and when I'd return. It was going to be outstanding - five hundred miles of favorite roads on a new motorcycle that had stolen my heart. W hat possibly could be betterr! Damn little! Not much at all! Then, in that final moment before breaking away, before turning my back on unfinished business, discipline grabbed the upper hand and made me another of industry's pawns. I was suddenly helpless to the slavery of Guilt. So slowly came off my helmet and leathers - yes, they were already on, ['d been that close to actually going. And I then slouched to my desk and sat in my chair. To face the music. And smell tne coffee. There were bills to be paid, proposals to be made, a roster of opportunities, commitments, visions, promises the list ran on for three whole pages. It was crushing, devastating. But. once I got into it, once I became resigned to the fact that there would be no highways until this was done, and done right, I went at it with a wild fever. Each enterprise I met like some demanding road, each achieve.ment was the victory of a well-ridden turn. I was fooling myself, sure! But the gimmick worked, and got me through it. And come early Monday morning, even before others were off to the job, I was off on my· bike, leaving the desk far behind. What a feeling! What freedom! And, sixty miles out, away now in that Realm of the Open Road, I was reassured that life has to have its two fighting sides. Its Mandatory Conflict, its Forever Struggle. The Dream, and the What-You-Do-About-lt. The countryside was magnificent and flying past, offering the thrill of ruling this world. Then, suddenly, gloves on the grips and still going for it, I had this thought. I was thinking about Work again, about a new angle on something, about yet another approach to this business of life. And, you know, I could barely wait to get back to the desk! The Ride is my ticket to ride.
