Congratulations, Scott and Wandal 2 Three-time AMA Grand National Champion Bubba Shobert's injuries from his post- U.S. G P accident at Laguna Seca on April 1 6 are continuing 10 improve, according to his father, Don. "Everything is going real good," Don Shobert said on Monday, May 22. "Wayne and Shae Rainey were here for the weekend and he (Bubba) really opened up." The elder Shobert reports that Bubba's balance is improving and although he is now using a walker, doctors expect him to ba off that in the next week. "His memory is coming back real quick. The doctors say there's still 50% swelling in the brain, so that means there's still room for improvement. We've been having him home on the weekends and during the week he's getting full days of therapy at the hospital." Shobert is receiving occupational, computer, physical and speech therapy twice a day. "He's not well yet, but he's coming along real good." Don Shobert said. On May 16, Senator John H. Chaffee (R-Rhode Island) introduced a bill, S1007, which would require states to pass motorcycle helmet laws for all riders and seat belt laws for all drivers or lose up to 10% of their federal highway consouction funds. The helmet provisions of the bill are similar to the Highway Safety Act of 1966 that forced states to adopt the first mandatory helmet laws. Chafee, the ranking minority member of the U.S. Senate's Commiuee on Environment and Public Works, has also included a small grant incentive in the bill to encourage states to implement and enforce the measure. However, the legislation does not jeopardize highway saf~ty dollar and Section 402 money. Thirteen years ago, motorcyclists overcame this type of legislation by supporting an amendment to the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1975 to prohibit the federal government from withholding construction funds from states that fail to enact helmet laws. Motorcyclists are encouraged to write their U.S. Senators and Senator Chafee to express their views. Concerned riders should write to: The Honorable John H. Chafee,567 enate Dirksen Building, Washington, DC, 20510. The Camel Pro Series half mile round scheduled for July 15 at West Virginia Motor Speedway in Parkersburg has been canceled. The facility is for sale and racing is suspended for the season. Replacing the Parkersburg event on the Camel Pro schedule is the Albuquerque Mile. "The Enchanted Mile" will take place in New Mexico's largest city on August 6 and will be promoted by Agajanian Enterprises, promoters of the Ascot Half Mile and Sacramento Mile Nationals. Coincidentally, the last time the Albuquerque Mile ran was 1976 and the fast qualifier at that event was Gene Romero, who now works for Agajanian Enterprises. Jay Springsteen won the '76 Albuquerque Mile and the points he .earned there helped him win the first of his three Grand National Championship titles. Besides Springsteen, current riders Steve Eklund and Steve Morehead competed in the event. The 1989 Albuquerque Mile will carry a Ronnie Jones, the veteran dirt track racer who finished the '88 season in fourth place in the Camel Pro Series point standings, stopped by the Cycle News office a couple of days after the Ascot ational Half Mile in which he finished fourth, to say hello to Papa and the editorial department guys. Jones, a fan of all forms of racing, said he planned to jet back home to Oklahoma City after the .J une 3 Camel Pro Louisville National Half Mile so he could watch the following day's Camel Supercross Series round at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. A couple of our younger editors think dirt tracking is easy, so Ronnie Jones and Papa are going to get together sometime this year and let them find out just how "easy" it is. "You get me a ride on 8 real road racer," said Jones, who attanded Keith Code's California Superbike School with Bubba Shobert a few years back and has since competed in a few club road races, "and I'll get my sponsor (Garvis Honda) to let your guys take a spin around a dirt track on one of my bikes."
