Searchin' for U.S. GP tape
I've got a major problem. On April
23, while most of the rest of the
country was watching the Laguna
'Seca U.S. 500cc GP on their local
NBC affiliate, WOTV (Channel 8)
in Grand Rapids, Michigan, opted
instead to telecast an NBA game
aired by CBS. That's right, our NBC
representative decided not to carry a
one-hour motorcycle race in favor of
crossing networks for something as
rare as basketball.
Please, please, if someone who
taped the Grand Prix off their local
NBC channel would contact me so
we could work out a loan deal, I
would be deeply indebted.
Besides being willing to pay
shipping charges, I have a copy of
the three-hour special coverage of the
'84 Daytona Cycle Week from the
USA network. That's the year Freddie Spence.r won the Formula one
and Two races and the Daytona 200
Superbike race, plus Bob Hannah
won the Supercross.
and their families.
What really burns me up is all the
finger-pointing, cry-baby readers
who have written in telling us how
stupid and avoidable this accident
wasl Aren't most accidents?
We must learn from our mistakes
and press on. Finger-pointing won't
help anybody. One finger-pointing
"rocket scientist" suggested revoking
Magee's racing license, while
another jumped your paper for not
pointing your finger fast enough.
I'm sure Magee has learned a lesson
he'll never forget, as did Bubba
Shobert and the rest of us.
What both of these gifted riders
could use is some support and
understanding. I hope that when
they are physically able, they will be
back on the track, faster and much
wiser,
Champions don't just win races;
they all make mistalc.es, overcome
them, and press on.
