Tracy Monterone (616) and Trevor Meagher dice in the second division of the 250cc Intermediate class. Meagher f inished second overall. Button collects G Carlsbad - SN win By Ken Faught CAR LS BAD, CA, JAN. 28 Arizona's Jim my Button bagged the 125cc Intermediate division one class win at the ' famed Carlsbad Raceway after battli ng with Ronnie Densford and Eddie Reed at CMC's Golden State National 'Am ateur MX. Button ga ted poorly and was in the back of the pack str uggling to mak e u p for his slow start. ' On th e second lap Den sford began pulling away from th e field, while Button managed to step in to the top five aft er kn ocking Danylo to six th . Button maintained a blistering pace and cont in ued to pound hi s way tow ard the fro nt of th e pack. Nea r th e ha lfway point the H onda rider had push ed h is way into th e runnerup position and mov ed in beh ind Den sford. Back in th e pa ck Reed was third after Monteroneand Kefal as both fell o ut of t~e t? P 10. Wiggins a nd Shipma n started receivin g pressure from Chuck Kinne a nd th e tri o swap ped pos itio ns severa l times, As Button cap tured the win in front of Den sford a nd R eed, Kinne st o le fourt h a hea d of Sh ipma n at th e checkers. Round two told a different tale as Button immediatel y sho t o u t into th e lead with Reed , Ri ch ard Saxton, J ason Newall and Dan ylo pursui ng close behind, Button quickly ope ned u p a sizab le lead as Wiggins a nd Sh ipman worked on Danylo and , Newa ll. By the half way po int "Yiggins' had mo ved to fourth with Shipman trai ling in fifth. Ray Crumb capture d th e win in di vision o ne of th e 250cc Interm edi ate cla ss. Cru mb ga ted third in th e firs t moto but was quick ly a ble to take com ma nd of the lead o n the seco nd la p. Once in to th e lea d Cru mb ope ned up a small cus hio n before earning the win ahead of Luke Ariciacone, T rey Cling fert , Pucelik a nd J eff Fin e. . Rou nd tw o aga i n witn essed Crum b ge tti ng a top-th ree start but this ti me he was n' t able to tak e th e lead . Cru mb trailed Bu tch Smith and Pu celik th e e n tire mo ta before p laci ng th ird. However, Crumb's 13 point accum u latio n scored him the overall victory with Pu celik, Smith, Arcidiacone and Fin e ro unding ou t th e top five. In th e 80cc Junior division one class Jeff Ti lton ama zingly scored th e overa ll win with a 6- I mot a score. Kawasaki-moun ted Steve H engeveld led Donald Up ton, Greg Ba ttaglia, Ty Kin g a nd Bob Sage from start to finish in the fir st mota but failed to mak e the top five in round two. T he second mota saw Battaglia ho lesh ot Hen geveld, U pton, King a nd Tilton o nly to lose th e lead after a short tim e. On the second lap bot h Battaglia and U pton fell out of the top five surre ndering the first to Hengeveld.' H en geveld took control . for two laps before he, too, fell way back and lat er dro pped o ut. With th e top three o ut of th e way T itlo n moved into the lead before takin g the win aheadof Sha wn McIntosh, Eri k Anderson, Mark G ilbert a nd Bob Sage. _ . The 6-1 score earned Titian the win, .topping King's 2-7 and Sage's pai r of fifths. McIntosh was fourt h with II -2 over Gilbert's 10-4. Division two of th e 80cc Ju ni o r class belonged to Greg Allen after the Suzuki rider scored two mota victories for th e overa ll. Wh en th e ga te dropped at the start of the fir st mo ta T im Stau fenbei l, R usty Holla nd , Greg Schnell a nd J osh Boykin chase d Allen 'the ent ire tim e, bu t never pose d a threat to the Suzuki pilo t. Allen got off to a bad start in ro und two but slowly made hi s way to the fro nt wh ere he cap tured the lead o n the last lap. Staufe nbeil took second in the fin al mota ahea d of Sch nell, Bo ykin and J ack Cox. Sta u fen beil netted seco nd with Schne ll, Boykin and H olland comp leti ng th e top five. At th e start of division two of the 250cc Beginner cla ss J eff Neubau er nailed a perfect start. Randy Green was second as Alex Wilson, Nick Santana a n d Br andon William s pursued close beh ind. Du ring the enti re mota th e top five sh uffled posi tio ns. Wh en it was over Neubau er collec ted th e win ahea d of Santana, Chuck Dempsy, Sco tt Williams and Brandon Will iams. Sco tt Will iam s blasted into th e turn for th e fin al mota with Neu bau er, Dempsy, Keith Sh erman and Brandon Williams hot on his tail. Up front th e top th ree traded pos itions with Sco tt Williams hangm g on to the lead until th e final lap . On th e last lap Nu ebauer found th e line th at he was looking for and motored on past the Yamaha rider. Dempsy ended up third, topping Gary Shoemak er a nd Santana.
