Ward strikes again atA'banyMX By Clay Ught AL BANY , O R. ocr. 2 Yamaha rider La rry Ward co n tin ued his rampage of th e CM C Yamah a Go ld Cup MX Series by virtues of wins i n th e 125 and 250ec Pro class es, both co m ing with I-I mo ta sweeps at round fou r of th e series . Ward taug ht the series' contenders yet another lesso n in ' th e ago ny . of defeat .by soundly thrash in g the co mpe u uo n III th e first 125cc Pro contest. Another of severa l fast Washin gton riders, Eric Hall , local rider T ony Grav es an d Lance Smai l chased Ward in th e contest, bu t it was Hall wh o ga ve Wa rd h is closest competition in the first .a fter G raves suffered fro m mechanical woes and dr opped off pace. Hall chased win ner Ward to the , fini sh wh ile Sm ail ne tted third over Scott Steffy, Darren Rogers and Graves. . Moto two saw G ra ves ge tting the ju mp o n the pack. but Ward took th e lead two turns later and never looked ba ck. This left Steffy, Smail, Gra ves and Do n Bisceglia to battle over th e sq ua bble for second pl ace; H all ra n deadlast. O n the move th rough traffic was H all , wh o has made an amazmg comeback after suffering (rom near car eer endi ng in juries. Hall cam e fro m lOth to fourth in two lap s and closed i n on bo th Graves and Smail , o nly 10 have his H onda go sour an d dr op off th e pace. G ra ves and Smail' s battle for second went to th e fin ish wi th Smail -losi ng out in the moto, but ear ni ng second pl ace laurels after his 3-3 consistency. Grav es netted th ud , with a 6-2. . T h e m ost exciting mo tes of the day 's program wer e the two 250ec ~ro .con tests. ' Smail led at the dr op of the ga te III fu st mo~o while Ward, G rav es, Kenny O lsen , Bescegha and Ida ho 's Larry Jackso n follow ed. Ward took the lead again leaving Sm ai l to battle for the number two spot with Graves and Yamaha ri der Jackson , who carved through tra ffic at a stellar rate to settle into fou rth behind Ward. Graves and Smail, but ahead of a cli ma cti c battl e th at waged betw een Biscegl ia , Ol sen , Scott G rimm. Gary .Su ode and lone Open Pro Frank McKuhn. ridi ng a Yamaha. Bisceg lia won o u t in th e wild shoot-out for th e number five spot at the co mp letio n behind ru naway wi nner Ward, G rav es. Smail and Jackson. Ro gers shot into th e lead a t the start of the second moto, but Smail too k over shortly thereafter . leaving Ro gers to fen d off Ward and Graves . Smail's lead lasted less than a la p as Ward soared over h is fello w Seattlearea rider to take the lead. Smail rode a lo ne in second until Graves carved through traffic to settle in to third and wage th e day's pre mire ba tt le. Graves and Sma il were whee l-to-wheel for the remainder of the moto, bo th 12·seconds behind Ward. Graves tried every move in th e book at relega ting Smail to th ird, but to no ava il as Smail sla m med th e doo r repeat edly on the , rider who is mos t li kely O rego n's fastest , to snag runner-u p laurels via 3-2 showings be hi nd Ward " s I -I. Mike Boggia ro uted his Cagiva past both Sh ay and Gardiner'to begin . th e second lap. Shay co n tin ued his pursuit of Gar di ner ano ther full lap befor e pa ssin g into second and the n dispensed of Boggi a less than a lap later . Shay and Boggia held their 1-2 positio ns throughout the rema inder of the m o ta as R ick Hamm ond worked his way fro m a six th p lace start to pass Gardiner with three lap s remaini ng. Rob Yenulo ni s rounded out th e top five. J ackson gr abbed th e ho leshot in mo to two with Bo ggia and-Shay o n his rear wheel. Shay was o n the gr ound in tum th ree with Boggia dr opping o u t at turn four with a broken brak e cab le. Gardi nermoved in 10 cha llenge Jackso n for th e lead and by the beginni ng of lap two , G ardin er had ta ken con trol of the top spot. J ackson remai ned i n second as 'Ken Frankenbery , Gary Bru ce and Tony Boyas m oved to th e fro nt of th e pack. By mid -race . Gardiner was o ut to a 17 seco nd lead as Shay moved into the three way ba tt le for second with J acks on and Fr a n kenber y. Sha y qu ic kly di spensed o f the two riders ahead of him and began to chip away at th e 19 seco nd lead Gar diner had bu ilt. Gar diner held a 13 seco nd lead a hea d of Shay a t th e chec kered flag. Boyas routed past Fran kenbery on the final lap to takethird wi th J ackson in fifth. Shane Smith rod e hi s Suzu ki to 1-2 mo to finishes in th e 250ec C class to ta ke the o vera ll win. J ack Steele hol esho t mo to one with Smith pounding on Steele's back tire for the firs t three laps whe n Steele and his Honda dr opped 10 ninth place. Smith took over first an d continued to put distance between h imself and th e 20 riders beh i nd . As Mike Williams and Henry H auen stein battled for seco nd. Shawn Fescem yer routed his Yamaha past the two riders to grab second wi th one l ap remaini ng . Steele led mo to two wi th Smith back in 12th place. Sm ith immediately be!?n pick in g off th e riders ahead of him . whi le Steele began pulling away fro m the group of riders. By the begin ning of la p two, Smith had moved in to seco nd with Hauenstein mo ving ahead of Kevin McCan n for third. Seventeen -year -o ld Strang topped th e 250cc , Ex per t class a t Cherry Creek. beating th ird overall Sco tt Davis by seven mi n utes and 57 seconds . U nfortuna tely Strang is out of the poi n ts h u n t de spite so me good finishes because he missed two races and was unable to fin ish a t Mexi co. If th e Darland p its were full of sm iling faces the n the opposite was tr ue i n the Davis pits. After high hopes at the beginning of the season, bad luck has dogged Davis li~e a ,:old that won't go away. Davis watched hIS poInts. lead slip away a t th e Ci nder Moun tain race when his YZ490 refused to run righ t and a flat tire ruined any chance of an overa ll win. There was more of th e same a t Cherry Creek. Davis bent two rims during the jet ting loop practice o n Sa turday before th e race. He worked , well in to the nigh t repairing th e damage only to get two mor e flats o n Su nday. Alt hough the rocky section too k its toll o n riders and machines, Davis an d brother Todd both had flats, broken frames and fin ished o n ba ld rear tir es.
