He took a second in th e heat race for th e 500cc Nov ice cIass and was led across the lin e by Honda-mounted Jerry Pestoni. I went back to the trailer, and we packed up to go ho me. "T he 250cc A class was four mot os lat er," added Mann. " I decided to unload and give it a try; I needed the mon ey." Gary Paul held him off for two laps, bu t soo n watched fro m behind as Man n moved by th en closed in on leader J im Royko. After follo wing Ro yko for three laps Man n mad e his move. The two bi kes clas hed landing orr a jump, but neither rider wen t dow n . Mann . was back on th e gas first a nd too k o ver the lead wh ich he held for the rest of the mo to, He claimed th e wi n ahead of Royko, Paul, Kenneth Elwood and Ear l May. Curry put it out front a t the start of mo to two. bu t Paul slipped around him. Royko, Mik e Jon es, May and Mann mixed it u p not far behind. Ro yko mo ved into seco nd, leavin g Man n to li ght th e rain-soaked, red tacky-clay rrack in an auempt to reel him in. By the tim e Mann o vertoo k Royko, Paul was long go ne. Paul claimed an easy win as Mann, May , Kevin Seidl a nd Ro yko followed. Derek Youngblood holeshot and led th e first 125cc A cla ss mo ta but went down. Mann bailed back in the fir st turn th en re tir ed for th e moto. Chuck Bell took over th e lead and stayed ou t front for two laps until he in jured hi mse lf lan ding hard off a jump. Cagi va 's Brian McElroy moved o ut front and quickl y establis hed a co mforta ble lead wh ich he held to th e fi nis h . McElroy wasted no time movin g into th e lead. Mann went aft er him but slipped com ing ou t , of a tum. Hi s bike didn 't kick over the fir st ti me and the lost few secon ds gave McEl ro y a n easy ticket to the win . Behind him , Kawasaki-m o u nt ed J eff Haase, Craig Ada ms , a nd Cliff Oak es sliced and diced in an effort to cla im second, as Manley wo rked h is way up through the back of th e pack a nd passed Randy No rma for fifth . At th e end of th e li rst lap, the number 10 nationall y ranked Manley, had worked hi s way pa st Adams and Oak es and began pr essu ring Haase. Haase got o u t of con tro l on the back sweeper almos t tak in g o u t Manley. The Sut ton Mo torcycle Raci ng Associa io n used a supercross for ma t with q ua lifiers and mai ns , a n d Francis eas ily won th e fir st q ualifier. Second pl ace was a duel be tween Ken n y Gordon a nd Leif For syth e wi th lock's Yogu rt-sponsored Forsyth e taking second a t the finish. Qualif ier two saw brother Joe pull th e ho leshot and lead th e entire race . Chris DeWinter took the lead but a th ro wn chain let Ron Soule on a Mot orcycl e Sh op KTM tak e the win. DeWinter was ab le to get going again quickly en ough to still cla im second and mak e th e very last transfer. _ Francis je lled into th e A main lead a t th e sta rt followed close ly by J oe and Blanchard. The Goods pulled aw ay from Blanchard and banged bar s for half th e race until Francis tired and J oe go t by. While J oe started to stretch out hi s lead Blanchard caught up to Francis a n d sta rt ed a n ew duel. In the: fini shing laps Blanch ard made a few m istak es, allo wi ng Francis a lillie breathing room. The' finish saw J oe with a big lead followed by Francis in second.
