Bob Werschey routed his Yamaha through tum o ne and held th e lead for three laps, wh ile KTM rider Chris Grasso mo ved into second from his sixth place holeshot, Grasso pounded on Waschey's back tire for a half la p before movi ng in to first, Gra sso held the lead for the remainder of the moto wi th Waschey holding second Knapp battled th e en tire moto with Kawasaki rider D.J. Heberlein as the two rid ers swapped th ird and fourth severa l times throughout th e race with Knapp grabbing th ird on th e final lap for th e win . Grasso too k th e holeshor in moto two with Knapp, Steve Wilmington and Werschey in ' pursuit, G rasso held on for two laps befor e droppin ~ o ut with mechanical problems. Knapp inherited th e lead, while Wersch ey mo tored in to second Wilmington began to fad e to mid-pack, Knapp' and Wersch ey held their 1·2 positions, while the riders behind jockeyed for position. Control of th e competiti ve SOcc Middleweight Expert Modified class was taken by Mark McDonald and he never slowed for the o vera ll. Keeney conects Mankato MX win By Ro lfe Ottem ess MANKATO, MN , SEPT, 18 Cory Keeney took an overall win in the hotly co n tested l25cc Intermediate clas s as th e Kato MC-hosted AMA District 23 motocross. Keeney also p laced third behind Mini Heavyweight's big guns Pat Donaho and Bra ndon Backes. Keeney launch ed into an ear ly lead in th e first 125cc mo ta and held on all th e way' for th e win. Lee Erickson looked like he had enou~h speed to challenge for the lead after co m m g tram behind but dropped o u t after his bike quit running on the last lap aft er he had moved into second. Ray Osowski and Tony Kohner rounded o u t th e top three. Jarrod Fortune grabbed th e holeshot on his Honda in th e next mota with Keeney and Erickson settli ng into the next two spots. Erickson nabbed seco nd from Keeney on th e third lap and went to work on Fortune. Coming ar o und to take th e whit e n ag. Eri ckson too k th e lead by di ving inside around th e big ISO degree tum and went on to win with a five seco nd lead Keeney held o n for third and th e overa ll despite Jack Pearson cl osin r; in fourth. Pearson's 4-4 finishes toppea Kohner's 3-S for second overa ll. J rrn Sco tt fired his Honda into' th e lead around th e hilly tra ck at the start of th e 250cc Expert ma LO. Point leader Jeff Oldenberg and Robbie Engstrom. who have been dueling for most of th e year closed in behind him. By th e end of th e third lap Scott had fallen to fourth , as Oldenberg. Engstrom and Pat Ril ey mov ed ahead. Oldenberg and Engstrom gradually pulled away from Riley in a battle for the lead . ,Engstrom was riding a bik e borrowed from Allen Sta ige and adapted well enough to grab the lead o n the last lap. Jay Hoenk grabbed the lead in the second mota on ly to have Engstrom displace him on th e firs. lap. Scott and OId enberg moved up to run 2-3 for a while. and then Oldenberg go t by whe n Scott cras hed in th e big ISOdegree tum.
