Schwartz tops Spdwy's Bruce Penhall Classic By Scott Dalo isio 38 SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. IO Back in the ir British League da ys, Bobb y Schwa rtz and Bruce Penhall ha p pened to be best friends and they also rode side-by-si de whi le they carried the colors of the United Sta tes of America. It was only fi ttin g that for the second year in a ro w, Schwartz cap tured the Bruce Penhall Classic I at Inl and Motor Speedway. T hi ngs went q ui te smoothl y for Schwartz who was celebrating h is 32nd birthday on the ni ght. H e made five starts aboard th e Budweiser/CTI Brace/ STP/Bell Oakl ey GM and he took five wins. That ga ve th e po p ular blonde a perfe ct score of 15 on th e ni ght wh en Ameri ca's o nly two time World Ch ampion was hon ored. Even though things went well for Schwartz, a few of th e o ther top co mpe titors had to ugh nights: "Sudden " Sam Ermole n ko, the o n ly American to q ualify for th e 1988 World Speed way Championship, fell while running last in his opening ride. That miscue cost Ermolenko three points and even th ough lie wen t undefeat ed th e remainder of the evening, he still had to co nt est a runoff with National Ch ampion Brad Oxley for second. Ermol enko ga ted in th e ru noff and Oxl ey, wh o had two wins earl ier in the night, co uld never make up th e distance and went home th ird. Har d ridi ng Steve Lu cero looked to be a shoo-in for th e runoff as he cam e onto the racin g surface for h is last o uting of the night. Lu cero had nin e poi nts 'and on paper, hi s final ride was hi s second easiest. Riding a GM , he gated the field , but Scotty Brown , with an unbelievab le drive off of turn two, zipped past L ucero for the lead. Lucero stayed close to Brown until late in the event when he fell in the secon d turn. H e went from a shot at second overall to a tie for fifth. Ronnie Co rrey, a tea m mat e of Ermolenko's on th e Wolverhampton Wolves of th e British League, was in town for a week of racing and made hi s first appearance o n the lightning quick track. When Correy managed to stay on two wh eels, he won. That happened three tim es but sandwiched in betw een , were two fall s th at resulted in zero points. His most interesting win came in event 15 wh en hi s kill switch was discon nected the entire way. The infrac tio n went .u n no ticed by o ffic ia ls a nd Correy m a intained th e wi n. H e ended up tied with Lucero at night's end. The victory rostrum was cro wded wi th Ermolenkos. AU G. 5 Dennis Hannel put togeth er a pair of wins in th e Pro class at th e Friday ni ght motocross at Baylands. In moto one th e six rider field charged off the line and within 30 yards Harmel had a slig ht lead. When th ey cam e out of the first corner it was Harmel by a bigger mar gin th an before. Close enough to worry Hannel was Matt Arena but in a lap or two Arena was off the pace and finished mid-pack. Taking Arenas' place in giving some battle to H annel was Gary Fargo on h is Yam aha and it was the pushing of Far go tha t forced Harmel to greater effort. At rnoto 's end it was H armel , Fargo an d Arena foll owed by Randy Dent on and the Porter bro th ers. In the second rn oto H arm el got an even better dri ve off the ga te and im mediately launched into a healthy lead . This time Denton too k up the cha llenge and p ut his Yamaha o n the heels of H a nneI. Dent o n 's best ride this seaso n was what it took to force Harm el's seco nd win of the even ing. Running th ird at this mo to fin ish was Fargo, which by virt ue of his 2-3 evening gave him the second overall behind Harmel. T h ird over all went to Dent o n, who earned th at spot with his 4·2 pl acings. In Vetera n Junior class action an excep tional performance by Douglas Crerar on a Husqvarna was enough to cap ture the o vera ll in an l l -rider field. H ottest rider in th e first moto was J erry Wohlgemu th on a Honda and he esta blished a huge lead early. All moto long Crerar whittled away at this lead a nd was definetl y closing but the even t ended while he was still IO feet back. In th e second rnoto Wohlgemuth was not the immediate leader and th ough he hung o nto Crerar all during the ea rly going he did appear to tire and could do nothin g to keep Crera r from getti ng a 2·1 performance. wh ich was just the tie breaker Crerar needed to take the overa ll.
