While Hamill was sizin g up the lead dU9 , Ronnie Correy was trying to lea n o n Scotty Brown in th e first bend. It didn 't work and Correy went down and pulIed out of th e event . Sam Errnolenko, co mi ng fro m the back, gu ided his GM past Brown before the end of th e opening go around for fo urth. At th e same tim e, H amill had worked hi s way pas t Bienert and was beginning to hone in on Ru ssell. H e ca ugh t th e seco nd year charger wh ile Er mo lenko sho t down Bien ert. Phil Collins, warming up for th e following week' s USA vs. the World American Cu p Chall en ge, left no do ubt in a nyo ne's m ind as to who was the fastest Scra tch rider at Ascot on T hurs da y. O ££ the pole, Co llins was out-gated by Ermolenko. The world's number three rider pulled it down on Collins in th e firs t turn, but he momentarily parked inturn two. Even though Ermolenko recovered faster than a blink of th e eye, Collins had alread y tak en advantage and drove by on his Rovazzini Electric/STP/ Cirello Racing/JT/ Reebok Weslake. . Collins moved aw ay fro m th e field before anybody else cou ld muster a serio us challe nge at his lead and he left them to battle for second. Ermolenko went wide off turn two the second time around and Correy, with the n icest move of th e ' meeting, threaded the needle between Ermolenko and Bart Bast and found himself in second. Things were not going Ermolenko 's way and when he hit turn four on lap three, he went sideways and a broken drive chain hurtled him to the dirt. Collins led the rest of the way and won by a decisive margin over Correy and Bast. It was th e Englishman's second South Bay Stadium tri ump h of 1988. Res ul ts SCRATCH: 1. Phil Collins(Wes); 2.
