By Clay Light . 36 ALBANY, O R, JULY 30-31 The 16th Annual O r eg o n O ld Timers National at Albany Supercross in Albany, was host to 216 riders from a six-state radius, including Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California; Nevada and Colorado and also several Canadian provinces. Among the weekend's big winners were California's P a u l Bostrom, riding a Honda, winner of the Master Pro class and Oregon's Jim Parks who won the Master Expert . co m petitio n. According to promoter Bob Leach, "T h is year's National was by far th e most successful. " The National classes ran three rnotos on Saturday and their final two on Sunday. Several support classes were run in conjunction with th e National, including a vintage race. Points were tabulated at th e completion of th e weekend's program in which an overall club would be recipient of top honors, The Oregon ch a p ter took first place with 189 points beating the Sierra Club's 169 points for first place. Following in the tallies were Washington with 139 points, Roc ky Mountain (33), Nevada (23), British Co lumbia (14) and th e Alberta '(Calgary) Old Timers' group seventh with nine points, respectively. . . Bay area rider Bostrom topped the first moto of the Masters class on Saturday beating Leach, riding a Cagiva, and Honda-jockey Ken Hogsdon. Moto two a lso went Bostrom's way, but moto three, the final moto of Saturday's program, saw Bostrom's chances of a sweep go down the tubes as th e Honda pilot ran o u t o f ga s allowing Leach a ,win an d th e points lead at the da y's end. Bostrom came back to co n vincingly thrash the competition in both rnotos on Sunday, beating Leach Ior the overall by one point, 16-17. Bostrom's 1-1-12-1-1 tally netted first to beat Leach 's 2-4-1-3-7 performances and th e 7-3-3-2-3 postings of Honda rider Bob White. Hogsdon (36-4-7-6) and Rick Kelley (11-5-2-5-4) filled the top five overall. In the Expert div ision, Parks' 11-2-1-1-. was unmatched giving the Honda pilot th e overall win edging Suzu ki-mo u nted Dave Merklin (4-21-6-2) an d California Van DePiero's th ird place netting tally of 5-3-6-45. Gary Highland an d Wa yn e Johnson rounded out th e top five. Colorado's Gary Shramizu, riding a H usq vama , won the Amateur class by virtue o f consistency th rou gh ou t the weekend. Sharmizu's 1-10-2-2-1 was good enough to take home top brass to Denver followed by California's Jim Boyd, winner of two rnotos, second overall after 5-1-1-6-3 performances, foll owed by J oh n Bartl ett , Gary Fahlander and local Husky rider Don Burkin, who thumped to a mota win in moto three and carded top 10 rides in the remaining motos. Sherrard sails to Senton ST win By Bobby Lewis BENTON, KY, JULY 22 John Sh errard ho lesh o t the 10-rider 80cc final tonight and held off a latelap charge by Tommy Hayden to take the win in front of a capacity crowd at Benton. Sherrard led Chris Boone and Hayden around the first lap with Hayden moving to second on lap two. Sherrard held th e line and th e top three spots remained th e same. Aaron Ladd ran in fourth th e en tire wa y in front of Paul Morgan, Nick Hayden and Luke Cone. Tommy Hayden swe p t th e 60cc class with a flag-to-flag run. Paul Morgan was the only rider close in second, a good di stance up from Joshua Knott, Nick H ayden and J aso n Goodwin. J enny Hayden went to the front of the 50cc Stock class and held off .. Beau Braswell for the win. Josh Rude . filled in the winner's ' circle after a race long bout with Jason Goodwin. John Warner finished out th e top five. Bra swell returned th e favor in th e Modified ranks with a winning ride over Hayden, Goodwin a nd Rude. Robbie Grief turned in a fla wless ride in the 125cc final, leading every lap enroute to th e win. Sherrard dosed in early in the race bu t a derail ed chain moved him to third behind Chris Goodwin. John Lewis, Mark Walker and Jimmy Allen went into tum three side-by-side in the 250cc main. Lewis went down and Allen went to the front. A lap later Walker lowsided and Chuck Allen slid by to second. Roy Hart (Yam) Hart, Graves fast atAlbanySX By Clay Light ALBANY, OR, JULY 23-24 Grayso n H a rt a nd T o ny Graves scored mo ta wins in the 125 a nd 250cc Pro classes during Motocross ' Northwest sanctioned supercross at Albany Speedway. Hart won out in a second-mota shoot-out in 250cc action for a 2-1 overall win while Graves did likewise to top the 125cc Pro class, Canada's Rick Ha merJ ackson rode to a I-I win in the O pen Pro ranks. Saturday's program was the Motocross Northwest Championship Series' banquet in which awards were given out to the top riders in each class from the five-race series. Winners of respective classes netted impressive prizes which included mountain bikes, jackets, racing ga so l ine , tires and number one plates. Graves took top honors in two classes, netting number one plates in 125 and 250cc racing. Hart finished runner-up to Graves in both. Graves proved h is wins were not a fluke on Sunday by virtue of h is overall win in the 125cc Pro class. In th e first mota it was the Hillsboro H onda-sponsored Hart sh o o ti n g into the lead with Graves a n d Hamer-Jackson holding down th e top three positions which would be th e finishing order at the end ahead of Don Bisceglia, Kenny O lsen and Darren Rogers. Moto two had Graves and H art in front with Hamer-Jackson in third. Graves took over for keeps on the second lap while Hamer-Jackson slipped past Hart for the number two spot. Further back a war waged between Dana Anderson, Bisceglia, Olsen an d Darren Rogers. Graves maintained his lead to th e finish, good for the overall win after 2-1 p erformaces to top Hart 's 1-3, Hamer-Jackson's 3-2, Bisceglia's 45 an d Olsen's 5-6 scores. The 25OcciOpen Pro class motos wer e equall y as ex ci ti n g. Keith Fo idel , riding a Honda CR500, jumped out front of th e first moto followed by Gary Beyer and Hart. Beyer got around Foidel on lap two and proceeded to open up a small cush io n on Hart and Graves until Hart motored past on the next circuit. On the fifth of seven laps Graves passed leader H art, going on to a win ahead of Hart, Beyer, Tracy Bethel and Bisceglia. In the Open Pro class it was Ham er- Jackson ta king th e moto win over Foidel. Hart lau nch ed into a huge lead in mot a two and had a good thing go ing up front until th e final lap when Graves carved past. Johnson doubles Thunder Creek MX By Toni Anthoni H IGH FALLS, GA, JULY 23 Honda-mounted R o ss John son proved to be the do m in ant force a t Thunder Creek's Sa turday night MX as he swept both rnotos of the 125cc B class with James Tims taking second. Johnson returned to top th e Open B class over Yamaha-mou nted Jay McCellen. In Senior Mini class action Team Green's Ezra Lusk was on stride taking both motos for the win over Johnny Dean and Bra ndon Smith. It was a different story in th e Super Min i class. In mota one Dea n grabbed the holeshot with Lusk at his rear wheel. O n la p two Lusk made his way by Dea n and rode to victory with Dean taking seco nd. In moto two Dean again put his. Suzuki out front with L usk d ose behind . As Lusk made h is move to pass Dean the two tangledwith Lusk · going down. Dean made the best of h is chance, taking the moto and the overall victory with Luskrecovering to place second. In the J u n ior Mini class Talladega Cycle/Maxima-sponsored Da n n y Haynes took the win. H ayn es p ut his Kawasaki out front early in each moto and cruised to the win with Jaso n Janey taking second a n d Yamaha-mounted Bryan Johnson third. Johnson returned to action in the 80cc Beginner class, taking the victory by way of double mota wins. The Novice class was the largest class of the night and it provided some of th e night's best racing.
