Carter, Knuth win Wapella ST By Bill Holt 30 WAPELLA, IL, JULY 17 Dan Carter and his Suzuki/Blendzoil Honda and R ick Knuth riding the Gene Knuth/joe Evans/DC Cycle Rotax fought off the heat, a bone shaking track and some very stiff compe tition to take class wins at the season finale of the 1988 Bl oomiruon -Normal M/C Di rt ' Track season. Shane Garrison got h is us ual slow start but made up the ground on the second lap to overtake Shannon Wright for the lead and then he ld on for the win in the 50cc final. Randy Smith settled for the third spot with justin Filson fourth. With the low turnout the 80, 125, 200cc classes were run together and that made a mess for the scorers, but David Allen had no trouble taking the win on his 125 over the 2005 of Greg Vogel and Steve Vigen and the 80 of Pa u l Williamson. Dan Carter shook off a lo ng series of second places of late to shoot into the lead of the two ro w 250 final and hang on for the win. Doni H ol eman moved u p from a slow start to grab the second spot over Da vid Allen and Shawn Wade. With the 400s and the Seniors pitted against eac h other th at gave Steve Meierotto and his 400 Husky a chance to tangle with Gary Brennan. Meierotto sli p ped into the early lead a nd then was surprised b y Brenna n in th e middle laps with a daring inside pas s for th e lead. Meiero tto moved back in front to stay in the late laps setti ng the final order. Steve Brinker had gotten by Brennan by this ti me and Brennan held down third in front of Greg Vogel a nd Ro n Wade. After so me co n fusion over the light the 500cc cla ss was restarted completely and it loo ked like the restart was going to give David Kno wles a new life. Rick Knuth had shot into th e lead on the first try with Kn owles in tow and had things well in ha nd when the red flag came out but Knowles got off first on th e restart and Knuth had to dig down and use a ll of the ponies in the Ro tax to get b y the two-stroke 500 o f Knowles' on the white flag lap to tak e the win. Honda-sponsored CB R600 . j ed Kimla took th e ea r ly lead over Papierniak, Bob Delie on the Bob's Bik e Shop Hurricane and john Eidenberger on his FZ R400 Yamaha. Eidenberger got by Deli e on lap two but called it quits on th e nex t lap after rain began to fall putting his FZR into a nasty slide throug h the carousel. Eidenberger saved it at th e last seco nd o n the edge o f t he p av ement but pulled in deciding not to chance a cra sh. Deli e rega ined th e number three spot and the n seco nd wh en Kimla and two backmarkers went down in turn one. Papierniak inherited the lead and ca u tio us ly ba cked off to hold on for th e win on the damp track. Win number two for th e Madison, Wisconsin, resident ca me in Middleweight Grand Prix, this tim e aboard a Suzuki 600 Katana he was swapping ba ck and forth with a friend in the Novi ce ranks. This tim e Papierniak led all the way leaving Bob Deli e and Bruce Bain to duel for second. Bain on the Van's Honda /Bob' s Bike Shop / jet-Air Fuel-sponsored Hurricane p ushed hard but could not get by Deli e and finished th ird . In the Middleweight Supersport event, Papierniak j umped out in front at the start with Kimla right behind. The pair pu lled away from th e pack again leaving Delie and Bain to decide the third position. Kimla got by o n lap five on ly to lose the lead the next go around as Pap ierniak repassed for good. In mota one Flanagan muscled his wa y past . Dave Brown in turn one to tak e the holeshot, Brown spent th e next three laps trying to overtake Flanagan but fell in a muddy spot while attempting a pass. Mike Sk illings inherited second place after moving up through the pack from a mediocre start. By the end of the rnoto Flanagan had seven riders on his tail but held on for the win. In mota two Brown to o k the holeshot and pulled a way from the pa ck on the first lap. It looked like an easy wi n for Bro wn b ut Rob Robey had other ideas. Robey passed Flanagan then whi tt led away at Brown. On the whi te flag lap, Robey nailed Brown in a sweeper tu rn to take th e lead and th e win. Flanagan cruised in for third, good eno ugh for . the o vera ll win. Tom Ma ack came away with an impressive win in th e 80cc Senior class. Maack took a commanding lead on th e first lap wh ich he held all the way to th e checkers in mota one. Stace y Krpan cru ised in for seco nd a nd Rob Brcka was third. In mota two Krpan took th e start a nd led the ope n ing laps, while Moock ran into troubl e a nd was running mid-pack. Moock blasted by several riders o n the first two laps to tak e th e lead a wa y from Krpan. Paul Hunter was al so putting in some fast lap tim es. passing Brcka and Krpan o n lap three. In m ota o ne, Schiel took the holeshot in the large Vet class on hand to day with Stiel d on a n d Honda-mounted Gary Warner in to w. Behin d them the pack was busy sorting th emselves out as Kawasaki pilot, Victo r Parker was attempting to overcome a back of th e pack start. The battle for the number fou r slot was being con tested by ATK rider, Bob Barnett and the Suzuki of Phillip Lock, Parker was on the move as he wea ved his way up through the pack putting Noel Grove and then Lock behind h im. Late in the mota, Parker moved into · the number three slot beh ind Schiel a nd Stieldo n. St ieldon was all over Schiel's Race Tech/Orange County Ya maha and made his move on lap six taking th e lead. Schiel, ri di ng wildly, chased the Honda rider all
