JU LY 16 Lew Woods, Da ve L esniak a n d Claren ce Bull took full advantage of th e sma ller rider turno ut a t TrailWa y Speed wa y's Sho rt T rack to claim their first win of th e season a t T ra il-Wa y. Woods pulled away to a fairly easy win o n the Ron Walters/ Coo rs Si lver Bullet Harley-David son in the 250cc Ex pert final, while Lesn iak used a great start to cla im the 600cc Expert class on the Herm y's Tire Sales Ro tax. Bu ll completed the Expert first timers' " hat tric k" by taking the lead from J oe Gately on the second to wi n his firs t 750cc Expert final a t Trail-Way. Not to be ou tdone , a pair of Amateurs also took th eir first win s at Tra il-Way - ' Robert Miller in the 90cc class a nd Scott Snoop in th e 200cc class. On the th ird try, th e 600cc Expe rts finall y go t ro lli ng, with Lesn ia k ge tti ng a big holeshot over Pa ul Crumlin g, J oe Heberling a nd Dave Mill er. Wh ile Lesniak's lead held u p in first , Crum ling a nd Miller got into a battle for second that lasted .the entire ra ce, wi th Crumling taking th e runner-up spot by a few feet. After numerous ch a nges , Snoop took fo urth fro m Varnes. Like Lesniak, Woods grabbed the lead at th e start of the 250cc Expert final from Mike Varnes, Snoop, a nd J e tt Conrad. While Woods wa s Lew Woods won t he 250cc Expert class at Trail-Way. pulling some distance on the others, Co nrad took over th ird at the end of the first lap, and go t in a heated battle with Varnes for second th a t wasn 't decided until the fin al turn wh en Conrad slip ped under heading for the £lag. Jeff Isola took the lead as th e 200cc Ama teur field ca me off th e second turn , with Gary Clark, Mike T homas, a nd Snoop. But as the field entered th e th ird turn, Snoop starte d to slice through it, a nd had the lead by the first turn on the second lap. Isol a had a comfortable margin 10 second, wh ile Clark and Thomas ba ttled for th ird until T homas fell o n the last la p. As he has done several times before, Miller grabbed th e lead as the 90cc class headed into the first tu m , this time followed by Ricky Winsett, Jere Alexander and Todd Wi nsett. Bailey KOD AK, TN, JULY 16 The " Su percross Specta cular" at Foothills Sports Park saw pre-race tensions high as riders prepared to battle for th e 3000 at stake in the P ro purse kitty. Riders from 12 dif ferent sta tes converged 10 earn their fair sh are, finding th e trac k surface seem ingly bottomless' m ud. Sean Dukes, hailing from Georgia wh ere red-clay-m ud racin ~ is the norm, won bo th th e qualifier a nd main mo tos of th e 125cc A class. J im C hes ter, who ' fini shed seco n d, refused to conce de a thi ng to Dukes, ho un din g him relentlessly a nd ea ting mud in the proces s, until a lapped ri der fell in fro m of h im as he'attempted a move for the lead on the last lap . Derrick Roe put in a stro ng, consistent effort, ta king advantage of ri der miscues to fin ish th ird. The 250cc A class had Dukes again pu ll ing th e holeshot, but Kenny Kizzar passed him in midair wit h textbook precision o n th e first lap, causin g Dukes to stu mble back into the congested pa ck. Steve Childress showed true grit by sli pping, sliding, falling and fighting his way through traffic to earn second place. Ch ester, ha nging o n behind Childress, ea rned respect fro m fell o w experts by taki ng third place. In a big upset, the cro wded 125cc C class was taken by Bill Lemons o n his origina lly white Cagiva. An obvio usly tired Chris Kitts was able to hold off J eff Ray for the secon d spot, with Ra y fini shi ng 'th ird.
