In moto two, Schiel again jammed on th e uphill start to take th e holeshot, Enscoe was the second rider to make th e sharp corner leading downhill into the scoring LOwer 90 degree tum. Parker and Grove filed through next with the pack bearing dow n on the . trio . Parker quickl y displaced Enscoe, wh ile Stieldo n was working h is way u p throug h the riders after a poor starl. Up front, Sch iel 'was trying to put as mu ch space between him self and Parker as he co uld. Stieldon was now pressuring Parker with th e KX pilot holding th e in side lines a nd successfull y defending second pl ace. The two riders ba ttled for the next six laps with Sti eldon trying everything a nd every line all to no avail. Jones AUBURN, CA, JULY 22 Jim Sisemore raced to his fourt h Scratch main victory and for th e second stra igh t week Charlie Venegas, sponso red by Cine Camera/ R&:R Body Works /We st Co ast . Muffler/No. I Bike Shop, won ' th e Handicap main at Gold Country Speedway. . Sisemore, sponsored by Viking Computers / Arai/Oilzall /Sm ith / A&:A Racing/H&:S Cycles/Cirello and Lowe T ires, flew out of th e number one starting position as th e tapes went up in the Scratch main. John Houston Jr., from gate two, went wheel-to-wheel with Mike Delacy as the y rounded the first tum. Delacy moved down next to Houston, taking away any room for Steve Martin. Sisemore inched ahead down the back chute as Houston rode the inside with Delacy next to him on the outside. After a lap it was Sisemore just in front of the two batt ling for second. On lap three Sisemore gained a little breathing room as Houston and Delacy were locked into the duel. As they came around for the checkered Sisemore took the win and Houston outlasted Delacy through tum four to take second by a wheel. With four riders starting on the 10yard line, whoever could break to the lead firs t was likely to win th e H andicap main. Venegas had th e -inside position and wh en the tapes went up Je ff Brown and Venegas went to the front for the earl y lead. Venegas hung on for the first go around and then settled into the groove for the rest of the six-lap race. As Venegas ba ttled Brown for th e lead Sisemore was working th rough the pack heading towards th e front. After getting around SCOll McNeil on la p five Sisemore loo ked to Brown and Venegas. Venega s and Brown were n ot going to let Sisemore through without a figh t and the two cra n ked it up for th e last lap. Bro wn moved up to pr ess Venegas into goi ng fas te r to stay away fro m Sisemo re, a nd Venegas responded as both riders kept their pos itio ns to finis h with Sisemore th ird. Schwartz storms to Speedway USA win By Scott Daloisio VICTO RVILLE, CA, JU LY 16 After a week off d ue to a race date in Engla nd, " Boogaloo" Bo bby Schwartz returned to his favorite spot in Victorville. That is the victory circle at Speedway USA and he arrived th ere af ter posting the win in the Scratch main. Schwartz too k his Bu d weiser/ C.T.I. Br ace/Troy Lee Desig n / K&N/ STP racer to victories in both of his Scratch preliminaries before th e main. Brad Oxl ey came off the pole for the main with Schwartz o ut of gate two. Louis Kossuth, the pr evious week's winner, lined up in gate three' with Gary H icks co mi ng from the outside. Sch wartz was o n his game from the start and drove off the line to lead over Oxley. Hi cks, wh o came off th e line third, tri ed LO advan ce one more spot before the en d of th e openi ng,circu it when he went to th e o u tside of Oxley. The National Champion was ready for th e onslaught a nd he fought off th e challenge and set his sights on Schwartz. Oxley tu cked in behind Sch wa rtz while th e diligent Hi cks pointed hi s Weslake down low and refused to give second place sitting Oxley a momen t' s rest. E ven though th e top three were in tight formation, Schwartz had th in gs u nder contro l. Oxley took one last desperate shot as they came off tum four th e fin al time but it fell short and southern California's winningest rider had bagged another win. Saturday's Handicap ma in started off with a bang when youngsters Tony Bienert and Kevin Jordan tangled onthe opening lap. Nobody was excluded but the oil pump was ripped off Bienert's machine and he was out for the night, He joined Greg Hancock who qualified for the main but injured himself later in the program and was forced to scratch. Jordan borrowed Rich Perkin's Weslake for the restart and took the lead over Gary Hicks and SCOtt Brant, His lead was short-lived as Hicks and Brant bo th squeezed by before the event was three turns old. In fact, Jordan, a rookie, was back to fifth at the end of the first circuit, Once the victory hungry Hicks placed his Modular Caseworks Systems/STP/Milne Bros. Weslake into the point, he was unchallenged. Charlie Venegas won a battle w ith Jeff Brown t o t ake hi s second consecutive Handicap main win at Gold Country Speedway . The biggest" battle on the tra ck took place fo r th ird between Sch wartz and Ice Champion SCOtty Brown. Brown continually tried to nudge his Jawa inside but Schwartz always managed to figh t him off. Wh en the Don Rob inson checkered brough t a halt to th e proceedings, . H icks had a half strai gh t victory over Brant, Sch wartz, Bro wn a nd O xley. In a fine gesture, Sch wartz and Oxley bo th do nated all of their Saturday winnings to rider- Ken Berry , who was serious ly inj ured at San Bernardino three n ights earlier. Results SCRATCH: 1. Buchli rolls on at BerthoudMX By Lar ry Johnson BERTHOUD, CO, JULY 10 Tim Buchli has been on a n incredibl e ro ll and extended h is win strea k by taki ng both the 125 and 250cc Pro class overa lls at Berthoud. Bill Perriton led Derek Brown and Buchli ou t of th e gate in the first 250cc Pro rnoto. Brown took th e lead shortly after, foll ow ed by Buchli. At .the sa me time, Corey Cope wa s ru nning into some banners, which locked up his rear wh eel: Brown ba iled a bit later, giving th e lead to Buchli. Buchli led Perriton and Dave Newell for th e next three laps, while Brown was up and back to fifth. Newell took the lead on lap five, and Brown was up to third. Brown roosted past Buchli and Newell on th e next go-'round and rocketed away to an impressive win. Newell edged Buchli for second. Cope gated ahead of Buchli in the second rnoto and held the lead to th e sta rt of lap two when he low- sided. Buchli tOOK over, but Cope was up quickly in second ahead of Kip Sandell. By lap four, Cope was leading a freight train of Buchli, Sandell and Bro wn that was pulling away from Newell in fifth . The lead foursome never changed places the rest of the race, with Buchh claiming the overall via a 3-2 tally. Cope was out of the running after a 23rd place finish in rnoto one. Buchli led moto one of the 125cc Pro class wire-to-wire ahead of Gil Murray and Sandell. He also holesho t round two in front of Keith Campbell and Mu rra y, but Campbell too k the lead o n lap two. Buchli regained it on the next circu it and never tra iled again. Murray finished second ahead of Campb ell for second overall. Newell and Bob H anrahan traded wins in the Open P ro class, bu t Newell took the second round for his 10th win in the class this seaso n. An dy Atkins returned today in th e 80cc Expert class with his brok en wrist wrapped. In spite of a courageous effort, rival J eremy Middaugh too k both wins, but Atkins ma de him earn each one. CA, JULY 16 Bobby McDowell won th e 500cc Open Expert clas s at the Lodi Cycle Bowl , as well as a second place in the Pro-Am class. The Pro-Am riders were off to a bad start in the main event. In tum one on the second lap, Charles Burke Jr. and Ken King got tangled up. It looked bad, but both riders were on their feet before the ambulance could get on the track. On the restart, Burke grabbed the holeshot with Randy Fisher a close second, Michael Gresham in third and Steve Raymond in fourth. By the third lap , riders were quickly changing positions. Fisher and Gresham went under Burke in tum three when Burke went out tOO wide. McDowell 31
