A Starr shines at Saxonbl!rg ST By Don Smith SAXONBURG, PA, JULY 3 The 1988 summer seaso n D-5 Penns ylvania State Fair Dirt Track Series opening round at Saxonburg, saw Pau l Starrwin the 125cc Expert class and take a come- fro m- behind victo ry in the 250cc Expert clas s to take home a pair of victorys. Dean Ri chards and Mike McCraven battl ed it out with R ichards getting. to th e checkered flag first to win the 125cc Knobby class . The 250cc Knobby had Tim Curtin take the win with 'Bill Kile y taking second place. Kawasakimounted Tom Portman won the Open Knobby class. The 125cc Short Track class had Paul Starr get the holeshot, and he never looked back to get the checkered flag first, Frank Hodak fini shed behind Starr to win th e 125cc Amateur class . . The 250cc-Open Short Track class was the best race of the evening. Tom Portman got the holes hot on a Champion-framed 500, whi le Starr was loo king for a place to pass. Russell, Roos dominate Texas Road Race By George Peckham HENDERSON , TX, J UNE 12 Georgia 's Sco tt Russell and Cam Roos came west to eas t T exas to take Suzuki 's and Ya maha 's contingency money. Ru ssell wo n A, B, and C P rod uctio n , then p laced first in · Formula One. Roos won C a nd D Superbike and finished fourth in C Prod uction. . In the O pe n Formula race, Britt T urkington got off to a grea t start to lead th e p a ck o n h i s stock GSXRllOO Suzuki. In second place wa s J eff Harder o n hi s Burke's Perform ance Cycle GSXR trying to keep up with Turkington. Behind, in third , was Bob Retoff, al so on a GSXR, sponso red by Anita Tucker , with Steve Pl entl next on hi s Denny's H ouse of Wh eels Yamaha FZR750. This pack remained tight throughout the first lap. However, by th e second go around, Scott Russell had worked his way up to them and mov ed past Plentl. Rick Delga do on a Devita lis Auto/Cycle/Yamaha of Killeen/Cam 2/Michelin-sponsored Yam aha FZR was following ' Russell's cha rge through the pack and al so moved by Pl entl. Delgado had some jetting problems earlier in th e da y, but seem ed to have th em sorted out as he tri ed to cling to Russell. Meanwhile, Turkington 's -fir st place wa s slipping a way alo ng with h is tires' tra ction. On lap four Russell took over first by passing both Harder and Turkington. Delgado moved past a slowing Retoff to mov e into fourth place. Russell had a noticeably stronger motor as he acc elerated down th e sh ort straight on the tight Oak Hill track. .A lot of racers were having trouble wi th tra ction on th e hot , slippery surface, due in part to some previous patch " work that was com ing unglued. Harder moved past Turkington on the next-to-last lap as Turkington kept slipping back. Harder had no chance of catching R ussell now with just one la p to go . Larry Preston (Yam). o o Criss cruises at Washougal MX By Brian Barnes WASHO UGAL, WA, JULY 3 Darren Cri ss topped th e 39-rider 125cc Beginner class as race (o ur o f th e TrickiGear/ MXN W Championsh ip Series went off with a big bang this Fourth of July weekend as so me 300 rider s too k o n Wa shougal's cha lle nging hills. _ H onda-mounted Cri ss opened the fir st moto with a big holeshot and immediately took co mmand. Behind him a war was raging as Town Center Yamaha's Trevor L evitt, N ewport H onda ' s Kevin Bal es , H onda-mounted . Matt Gable, Sam Sulentic and Jimmy Marquez all jockeyed for position during lap one. Cri ss was on th e gas as he open ed up a huge lead over Levitt, Bales a nd Gable, who was making a move to tak e over second. On lap three it was obvious that, barring a crash , Criss would be the winner. But Bales, Gable and Levitt, who had dropped a couple of positions, were still ' locked in a dogfight for second. Gables moved to seco nd as th e white flag ca me out but problems on the fina l lap dropped him to fourth, giving Bales seco nd a nd Levitt third with Cri ss an easy winner. Moto two found Levitt leading Roman Ro ss and J amie Bofman wi th Bal es, Cr iss, Gable a nd Dan Cook in hot pursu it. Levitt led the first two laps until Cr iss o nce agai n moved into the lead, but th is ti me Criss wou ld have his work cut o ut fo r him. Levitt, Gable, Ross a nd Bales all had th e leader in sig ht.but aga in it was Gabl e tha t did the charging. Gabl e pi cked off both Ross a nd th en Levitt to take over seco nd a nd set out aft er Cris s, but it was no t to be as Criss too k a no the r win a nd the overall whi le Gabl e's effort netted him both seco nd in the mota a nd overa ll. L evitt, Ross, Bal es a nd Bofman ro unded o ut the to p six . The 250cc Beginner class a lso had a larg e t u r no u t but five r iders dominated th e action. Kawasaki riders Matt Barnhart and Rod Co mstock sped to both win s a nd runnerups, resp ectiv ely, with H onda rid er Tom Marlin com ing from behind to tak e bo th thirds and th ird overall.
