Goodfellow grabs Castro' Challenge RR By Mercedes COQUITLAM, n.c., CAN, JULY 3 40 Gary Goodfellow led the way at the Castrol West Coast Challenge, topping two classes at Westwood Motorsport Park. In the 600cc Production race, Gary Goodfellow, just back from a 600cc Production win at Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, lived up to his reputation. Riding a Honda CBR600 Hurricane. "Goody" won the heat race and the main event with no problems. jim Dewitte, also on a Hurricane. was in hot pursuit. but was unab le to close the gap and took second. Rob Much took the third spot finish on a Suzuki R G500. Much is the top amateur in this class beating most of the pros. Finishing fourth (third in the pro standi ngs) was Darryl Fletcher on another H urricane. The next event of the day was the 750cc Production race. Goodfellow and Dick, just back from Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, and Steve Crevier just back from Elkhart. Wisconsi~ waged a war. To start the event, Ken LaLonde on a Yamaha FZR750, took the holeshot bu t wasn't able to stay in ' front for lo ng. By the second lap, after some serious bumping, Dick , on a Suzuki GSXR750, led the pack. He was being followed very closely by Crevier, riding a Yamaha FZR 750R. Goodfellow. riding a Honda RC30. Darryl Fletcher, riding a Honda VFR750R, LaLonde and Gary Berge, riding a Yamaha FZR750. . By the fifth lap, Goodfellow made hIS move. passing both Dick and Crevie r coming over Deer's Leap to take the lead. By using the back markers Goodfellow stretched out his lead all the way to the checkered flag. Dick came in second while Fletcher finished third. The Formula Two r~ce was Crevier's all the way. Crevier on a Yamaha TZR250, won the heat race on auto-pi lot and then went on to victory. The rea l battle in F-2 was between Dave Chiter, riding a Suzuki RG500 and Sean Smyth on his Honda CBR600 Hurricane. Although th e RG500 out-powered the CRB600 on the straightaway, the Hurricane outbraked the Gamma into the corners. During the 750cc Superbike heat race, Crevier led all the way taking the pole position for the main event. Crevier got the holeshot in the main on his Yamaha FZR750R. Unfortunately though. Crevier's bik e seized c,?ming into the hairpin, putting him out of the race. Steve Trinder missed no opportunity as he took the lead on his GSX R750. By th e third lap, though, Dick. riding a Suzuki GSXR750 nudged Trinder OUI of the way. Goodfellow, on a Honda RC30 was right behind him. By the fourth lap, Dick led Goodfellow and Trinder. Dick was able to hold on to first p lace for the rest of th e race, much to the disappointment of Goodfellow, who was hoping for a hat trick. YAM RZ CUP: 1. Kevin McDiarmid; 2. Dave Sjoblom; 3. Paul Hopper. Bagwell bags two at lACR Motocross By TerrY Rezek PALMDALE, CA. JULY 10 Chuck Bagwell won four motos at th e CRC battle at L.A. County Raceway, winning both the 250cc and 500cc Novice classes. The wins were not ' easy as the Chemex Western /White Bros.sponsored Bagwell fought off Rich Barton in both 250cc rnotos. In the 500cc event, Chris Ridgway was on Bagwell's rear every inch of the way, but Ridgway had to settle for second. In the 125cc Pro class, Troy Welty got off with a rush as he grabbed the holeshot. Jeff Barbacovi was last off the line at the start of moto one and into second by the end of the first lap. He took th e lead from Welt y by the end of lap three and pulled away to win by 15 seconds. Welty took the early lead again in Jeff Barbacovi (123) leads Troy We lty (30) in the 125cc Pro class at LACR. Welty won the second mota and took the overall win . moto two, Barbacovi started slowly a.gain but caught up to Welty on lap five and took the lead away. This time, Welty was not about to let Barbacovi get away and the two got into a slam dance that saw the lead ~ha n ge five times in two laps. Going Into the last lap, Barbacovi was in second and pushing hard. With a half a lap to go, he made a move for the lead and went down hard. There was no time to recover and he had to settle for second overall behind Welty. The 250cc Intermediate race saw David Bagwell and Glenn Commans in the lead in moto one. Carlisle took third by the time the race was half of a la p over. He set the secon d place rider up at the end of lap one by outleaping him over the last jump and getting a wheel ahead into the last tum. With exactly the same move Carlisle took the lead at the end of lap two. From there, he rapidly pulled away to win rnoto one by more than 15 seconds wi th Commans second and Bagwell third. Bagwell took the lead again at the start of moto two, followed by Commans. Commans litera lly flew into the lead right at the end of lap one. Rickel roosts atOCRMX By Jeff Sherry BITHLO, FL , JULY 9 Randy Rickel put together a 2-1 moto score to take the overall victory in the Woods I class at Orange County Raceway. The first moto saw Mike Metzler gra~ t~e ear! y lead followed by Jason Christie. R Ickel got off to a fifthplace start just behind Yamaha rider Scott Radikopf. Rickel and Radikop f started to make their way to the front of the pack, and once they got there they.put on a dogfight for the lead. passing and repassing.each other all the way to the checkered flag with Radiko pf taking the win. Rickel finished a close second followed by Metzler then Christie. . In the second moto Rickel took th e lead on the firs t lap to win the rno to to finis h second. Metzler again took third which was good for second overall. Radikop f fell in the second moto, leaving him fourth overall. I The I25cc A class saw Dean Dyess get the holeshot, but he tangled with Tim Pangburn in the second turn causing a pileup. Bobby Downs took advantage of the pileup and jumped into the lead and was never headed. Pangburn got back up to finish second followed by Karl Kirchbaum. The second moto saw another pileup but this time Dyess got around it all and pulled out a goodsize lead to win the second moto. Bobby Downs got up from the crash and put in a hard ride for second in the moto and first overall. Pangburn finished third for second overall. Honda-mounted Charles Gambino grabbed the holeshot in the first 250cc moto and never looked back. Robert Whitney, also on a Honda, got stuck in the gate but put in a hard ride for second place. Lee Marin II I tangled with Gambino and went down, but got up to finish third with Eric Schrader corning in fourth. Schrader got the ho leshot in moto" tw~ but was passed by Whitney, who Ie! It all hang out com ing out of th e tricky second corn er. Whitney put in " a great ride to take the win and overall honors. Gambino came in second overall , and Martin again had trouble with fallen riders to take third.
