Kueblers cruise to SIRMXwins By John Dixon KEN T , WA, JULY II Larry Kuebler a nd young brother jon blasted their way to both moto wins in the 250cc Intermedi ate and l25cc junior clas ses, resp ectiv ely, a t th e Seattle International Ra ceway Park.After being closed for over o ne year th e tra ck was reopened and th e riders were treat ed to a redesigned tra ck of sa nd and clay. In the 250cc Interm ediate clas h Kueb ler made sh on work of th e co m pe t i tio n, foll ow ed by Chris Moritz a n d Ca sey Cad e. Moritz p ushed in vain as he had failed to sign up for th e event, but later-won th e Vet Interm ediate class wh ere he was legall y sig ned up. Rayborn, Carroll win last Riverside RR By Valerie Peeler 38 RIVERSIDE, CA, JUN E 26 Ca lvin Ra yborn II I and Peter Carroll swapped wins in th e 750 a nd Open Su pe rsport ra ces at the AFM 's lastever mot orcycle race a t Riv erside International Raceway. The even t proved to be a troubled event, as one rid er was killed , two receiv ed broken legs and severa l practice sessio ns a nd races were red- _ flagged. Will iam Burns, AR RA Battle of The Twins Champion, was fatally injured during practice when a panel flew off a sidecar, landing on the track in front of his Ducati, As he swerved in a n attempt to dodge the obstacle, Burn s hit a barrier on the back straight and died within minu tes, In spite of th e da y's misfortune, some go od races developed. T he first start of the 750cc Supersp ort race was red -flagged when jeff H agan went down Just off th e starting line and was run o ver b y a no the r rider , resulting in a brok en leg. On the rest art , as on th e orig ina l sta rt, Rayb orn was fir st o ff th e grid , fo llowed closel y by Peter Carroll. The pair quickl y gained a slight edge over the rest of the pack, which was head ed up by Doug T ola nd, Lee Sh ierts, Scott Cavness, Ch uck Graves a nd Ch arl es Pittman. Carroll moved qui ckl y, and by the midpoint of lap two he had seized th e lead . wh il e To land and Sh ierts had managed to sha ke off their han gers-on. Carro ll led through ou t the bulk of th e race, hounded by Raybo rn who, on th e last laps, struck back, recoveri ng the lead he had held a t the start. Rayborn made th e swi tch stick a nd took th e checkered wi th Ca rro ll in tow . Carroll was ag ain in the th ick of th e race for first p lace in the O pen Superspo rt class. As in hi s first race, he was second off the lin e (this time led by Pittman a nd trai led by Cavness), but led by lap two. Pillman she p he rded Carro ll around the track , leavin g him lit tle ma rgin for error as Cavn ess dogged the du o in third spo t, holding his p lace and stay ing within striki ng d istance. By th e race's midpoint, the to p th ree Carroll, Cavn ess a nd Pittman - had settled into th e posi tions they would hold a t th e end. Ca vness pi cked up the tem po on th e last few laps a nd was soo n sn ortin g dow n Carr oll 's tail pi pe for a kn ock-down , drag-o u t fight on th e last la p. Pi ttm an followe d three seconds behind - a dis tance tha t increased over the last two laps as th e first two turned o n the afterburn ers for their last-ch an ce dash to the fin ish line. Triplett takes Elkhorn HM By Dave Hoenig EL KH O R N, WI , JULY 10 Randy Triplett brought his Al Muth H-D /G en eral Engineering/B ell / Nei l Winston-sponsored HarleyDavidson home first in th e 750cc Pro class a t th e Carroll Resweber Cl assic a t th e Walworth County Fairgrounds by leading every lap. Davey Du relle close d in th e latter laps but ca me up shor t. George Istvanek du eled with Durell e early th en settled into a com forta ble third over Greg Wagenknecht and Chance Darling. T he 600cc Pro class was th e first race run as a light rain started falling. Durel le, who had traveled all night fro m th e H ag erstown National, sho t hi s Donahue H-D / Al Muth H -D/ Ron Wood Ra cing/Shoei/Gen eral Engi neering/ Bell-spo nsored WoodRo tax to th e front. Triplett , Recil H an, Tim Farrell and Dave Camlin were bunched a di stan ce back as the rai n started falling harder. Visibil ity was a problem as the field stru n!?out: Durell e was long gone and Tnplett was safe in second. Hart had proble m s and p u lled off wh ile j im Hauptman was on the move, taking third on lap five over Farrell and Ca ml in. T he Pro -Am final went to james Hart on his Hart MC Repair Ro ta x after a good battle with Frank Kaiser. j o hn 'Dill en burg and Roy H a rt jr: finished a distance back in third a nd fourth. The closest race of the day was in the Pee Wee class as Pete johnson, Brian Wagoner a nd j eremy Deruyter locked in a tight battle for the lead. Wagoner edged johnson at the finish line for the win. The Mini class was another close fa ce as Gl en Schnabel and Paul Morgan battled over first. This lasted unti l th e start of lap 'seven when , as th ey were lapping riders, Morgan' tri ed to go in side Schnabel entering turn one only to hit Schnabel's back wheel , making Morgan high-side a nd bringing out th e red flag .
