This weekend marked the return to the fairgrounds for motorcycle racing after a 12-year break . " T h is w eek end wa s a nonspectator even t, so rt of a test run, " said WERA 's Buzz Pritz. " Since things went well this weekend, we hope to really promote thi s event in the future." Most riders ca lled the tra ck " rea ll y fun " but sai d th e ex tremel y bumpy infield sectio n needed improvement. Two riders wh o race d her e in 1976 were back this weekend. Ed Key and Al ex Bub (bo th form er WERA National Champions) showed up to race on the I. 7-mile circuit. " It 's pretty much how I remember ed it 12 years ago. We ran it in the opposite direction back th en ," said Key, who celebrated the return to the tra ck by winning the C Prod uctio n race. Ray Yoder set th e fastest lap time of the weekend during th e A Production race. On the third lap, he turn ed a 1:18 .68 on h is Suzuki GSXR 750. " I sort o f liked the bumps. I just rode loose and the bike seemed to hand le th em rea ll y well ," Yoder sa id. O ne man who could n't get used to th e rough infield was Honda RS250-mounted Gary Gibson. Gibso n stru/igled with the sens itive GP bike while leading all but the last lap o f th e Formula Two race. H e was pas sed by Alan Bertabnoli on his FZR400. Randy IlIg (Tri). o o o Himes hooks up at L.ake Gen eva MX By J ac k Biddison LAKE GENEVA, WI , J ULY 15 T ak e a star-studded field of top not ch riders , an expert ly prepared mot ocross course a t the Lake Geneva Raceway and you have a ll th e ingredients that came together Friday night a t the Lake Geneva Raceway for th e Friday night Suzuki Championship Stadium Motocross Series, in which Chris H imes ca p tu red the 125cc Amateur class victory. Himes, Suzuki, earned the overall rider honors points as he finished second to Brian Batagl ia, Suzuki, in th e heat and th en rode from far ba ck on the first lap in the main, to third on' th e second lap, seco nd on the thi rd circuit and then led on th e fourth la p of the nin e lap ma in , to win going away over Kawasaki riders jeff Michaun , and Brett Schacht. Bataglia had been fourth up until th e ' la st lap when he and jeff Schwartz, Yamaha, crashed together a nd fin ished only 16th and 19th . In th e 250cc P ro feature, it looked like Bob Nebel, Suzuki, who had finish ed seco nd to th e youngest rider in the class, 19-year-old Brock Powers was coming on for the win in th e main , but his motor seized and DNF earn ing o n ly six th overall in th at class.
