Rogers on the gas at 8aylands Motocross By Mike Vancil FREMO NT , CA, J UNE 17 Dave Rogers was really on the gas as he won the 125cc Intermediate class at th e Friday night weekly motocross a t Ba ylands Raceway Park. On ly one moto was run due to a powerline failure th at curtai led half the program. Rogers a nd Steve Bonita, both on Hondas, were side by side into th e first corner a nd already a length ahead of the three junior class riders that sta rted a t th e same ti me bu t were scored separately. By the time the pair hit th e second corner Rogers had mov~ ahead sligh tly. Rogers stayed and Just kept th e 125 buzzin g a nd made no mistak es. Bonita was only 10 lengths beh ind a t the finish. In Vet Intermediate class action Erik Sch affer beat his two class ri val s, john Anderson a nd Terry Castillo, and a whole host of Vet junior class rid ers that started the moto at th e same time. Schaffer go t out of shape a few umes In the rockers but did not back off. The hottest j uniorclass veteran was Bill Malon ey who initially had the holeshot on th e entire Vet class. Pete Urfer ba ttled with Aaron Cantrelle in the Mini junior class and a lso had to beat seven Beginner class riders on the track in order to earn a trophy. Turner tames AscotMX By Ken Faught GARDENA, CA, JUNE 17 Ron Turner piloted hi s O 'N eall R oko Qui ckstrap /Cabl esav erspo ns<;Jred Yamaha to two consecu tive WInSover Clark Kawasaki 's Dan Berg in th e 250cc Pro class at Ascot Park to take ho me a nice size ch unk of cash. First-m o te action saw Eric Sandstrom ge t th e early jump o ut of the gate o n ly 10 have Kenny Zahrt a nd Bob Kline shoot around the o utside and take ~ver the lOp two positions. O n the first lap Zah rt and Kline easi ly pulled away whi le Turner Ski p God in ez and Berg struggled t~ get arou nd Sandstrom. T he top three soon changed as Zahrt dropped 10 th ird, givi ng Kline the lead a nd Turn~r a close second. Berg rapidly cut hIS way through the pack a nd a t the halfway point took th ird away from Zahrt. On th e last lap T u rner managed to sneak by Kline for th e WIn foll ow ed by Berg, Zahrt a nd Godinez. Second m oto ac tion saw Kline holesh ot T urner, Berg, Zahrt a nd Sandstrom. The top th ree immediately pulled away from th e pa ck as ~erg a nd Turner began pressuring ' Klme for the lead. On the third lap Kline lost his chance at the overall as he pitched his Honda in a ber m quickl y remountin g in th ird. On th~ last lap Berg made a n attempt to pass T urner in a narrow ch ica ne , but Turner sh ut the do or on Ber g's charge. Turner too k the win and th e overa ll a!'tead of Berg, Klin e, Zah rt a nd Godmez. Danny Fonteyn led Mike Buff, Eric j ~sper, Chr is Ke!al as and C hris Ri dgway m th e firs t 125cc juni or moto o nly to get sideways in th e first turn and drop to th ird. The first few laps saw th e top five tighten up with no change. On th e fourth lap Buff dropped 10 fifth, giving jasper the lead ov er Fonteyn and Ke£ala s. Fonteyn soon motored into th e lead a nd claimed th e win followed by jasper, Ke£alas, Ridgway and Buff. Second moto ac tion sa w Fonteyn aga m grab the early lead over Karl Fernandez, Ridgway, Richie Sh erman a nd jasper. Ridgway quick ly dropped Fernandez to third and th en ca.ught Fonteyn. With two laps to go Ridgway stuffed Fonteyn in a tight turn, th e two riders tangled and Ridgway went down. Bob Tippit (Kaw) . o Miller rolls at Moto Sport MX By Peggy Adam ic MILLPORT , OH, J UN E 12 Chris Miller added to his yearly poin ts lead by grabbing the overall l25cc C class victory with 3- 1 moto talli~ at Moto Sport Trails. . BIll Koleno took a start-to-finish wi n in moto o ne. Miller and jack S tee le p iloted th eir mac'hines through th e first turn behind Koleno and remained there for two laps until Miller fell over the whoops. Steele took con trol of second with Miller picking up the pace in third. Koleno had his three-second lead cut as Steele gained on the front runner. Koleno raced through the ch eckered flag with Steele on his rear wheel. Miller held third with the .hard-riding jeff Sanders finishing a close fourth. Miller took th e lead through turn one to . begin the second moto. Koleno passed Steele before the begining -of lap two and quickly m<;>ved t~ wi th in a bike-length of !\fIll er wi th Steele moving in to mak e II a threeway race for firs t. The three ra n a tire-to- tire race th ro ugh four laps when the three hea ded into th e woods section of th e track. Out of the woods, Miller held th e lead with Steele in second. Kolen o cras hed in hi s quest for first pl ace. Miller took th e wi n, less th an a bike-length ahead of Steele. Sanders was a distant third. j ohn Shay took two moto wins in the combined 125/250 A class. Greg Wheeler worked his wa y into the lead 10 begin mo to one and remained there fo r three la p s whi le Sh ay worked his way to the front of the pac,k fro m h is fift h-place sta rt. Shay easily took th e lead a nd by rnoto 's end, had worked u p a seven- second lead a head of Wh eeler, Mik e Boggia and Barney Barnett. In moto two, Wheeler was chased through turn one by Boggia and Sh ay. The th ree front runners all found themselves in mid-pack after a second-tu rn pileup. Brian Doran vaulted into th e lead wi th 'Tim Deutsch and B~rnett routing past'the downed nders In to second and third . Within th e fir st lap , Barnett passed Deutsch and moved in on Doran whil e Sha y m o ved in to fo u rth . Barnett took the lead as Shay passed Deu tsch and Doran wi thi n the same lap.
