RAVENNA, OH, JUNE 19 H onda-mounted Chris Bodo rode two £lawless start-to-finish motos to ca p tu re th e 125cc B class victory a t Ohio International Racewa y. Bod o 's win moved him into first place in th e class' yearly standings. Curti s Stantial motored into second behind Bodo at th e start of moto one. Patrick Williams held third until th e two-lap ma rk wh en bike prob lems forced him ou t. Rick Boepple mo ved into third a nd began to reel in Stantia l, but he ra n o ut of tim e. Bodo h eld th e lead wit h Stan tial, Boepple, Mik e Snyder a nd Dave j azbec ro u n ding out the top five in a .tire-to- tire finis h. Bodo a nd Boep ple were 1-2 a t th e start of m ot o two an d rem ained th ere th roughou t th e five-lap mo to. Ala n Bat ed moved into thi rd with Snyder reel ing in and passing Bat ed on the fin a l lap . Nea l Davis continued his domination in th e Open B class as he swept both motos with wire-to-wire wins. Eigh t ridersli ned the ga te for the 50cc Auto ma ti c' class and ·A n d y Wickens went th e dista nce, grabbi ng double moto vic tories. Barnett closed in on Deutsch and passed him with two laps remaining. Hank took th e win with Boggia in ches a hea d of Barnett at th e checkers in seco nd . Deu tsch held fourth. T erry Deliman piloted hi s Suzuki to th e double moto wins in th e Senior 30-40 class. Deliman took sta rt-to finish victories in eac h moto as did George Singler in th e Senior 40 and Over group. Sanchez snatches Baylands Short Track By Mike Vancil FREMONT , CA, J UNE 24 J immy Sanchez topped the Pro class in cras h- filled short tra ck acti on at Baylands Raceway Park. T wo ro ws o f six got the go ligh ts a nd Frank Sanchez got th e hol eshot into th e first tu rn. For the first co u p le .' of laps th e 12 riders stayed bu nche d .and everyo ne kept on their wheels. By the third lap th e spills began. Four riders fell a nd took themselves ou t o f conten tion but th ere were no injuries. While th e front runners were spared from th e sight of th e sp ills behind th em , it took on ly seconds for th e leaders to co me upon th e cra sh victims a nd th eir m achines. In turn three, Jimmy Sa nc hez sized up th e situation a nd moved arou nd a spill a nd took over the lead. For two more la ps it was an a ll-Sa nch ez sho w as Ji m my and Frank led everyone. Then a hard-working Mark Corsetti was able to get hi s Wood -Rotax under. Frank Sanch ez and took over seco nd. This m ove inspired the everwatch fu l Anthon y Giammanco a nd he too got by Frank. The few rema in- .. in g laps saw Giammanco power by Co rsetti on th e front stretch to gain second but h e had no more time or laps to catch leader J immy Sanchez. Linda Speedway ST By Len Breech JONESTOWN , PA, JU NE 18-19 The Varnes cousins, Kevin a nd Mik e, came away from Linda Speedway's double-h eader short track with th ree wins a nd a seco nd between th em , with Kevin top ping the comb ined 125cc Amateur and Expert class both · days, with Mik e taki ng the 600cc Expert fina l on Su nday and seco nd in th e 250cc Experts. In addition to Kevin 's do ubl e win, th e on ly other rider to do ub le both days was J ohn Winsett in the 50s. Saturday n ight wa s one of those n ig hts th at th e a m bu la nc e spent more ti me on th e road than a t th e trac k, as th e delays pushed clos e to local cu rfew aft er th e th ird incident o n th e seco n d lap of th e 250cc Expert fin al. Races from th e 250cc Expert fin al on were paid from th eir gr id po sitions, less th e riders who were injured. This elim ina ted T om Cercie llo's two fast times in th e 250 a nd 600cc Ex pert classes as h e sustaine d a seaso n en ding foot injury in the 750cc Ex pert class . Two of the th ree fin al s co m p leted were very close. Kevin Va rn es grabbed the lead in the co mbi ned 125cc Am ateur/Expert fro m defending 125cc Nationa l Ama teur champ, Georgie Price, and the rest o f the field. Price too k th e lea d on the seco nd lap, b u t Varnes regained the lead th e fo llowing la p, and started to pull, away, but in the late laps, Price started to close the gap, but he co u ldn' t catch the £lying Varnes. 1 Compared to th e night before, Sunday wa s incident free; but tfie trac k developed into th e expected n arrow groove tha t some 'rid ers fou nd o ut you don' t try to pass h igh o n. Highlights were two very close Experts, and Kevin Varnes second win over Georgie Price. Mike Varnes grabbed th e lead from Dave Sm ith, Kenny Mohler, Lew Wopds and Paul Crumling. Woods m oved into third by th e seco nd lap as th ey freighttra ined arou n d th e track . Sm ith tried to pass Varnes on th e outside, only to lose severa l sp o ts doing so. J et.t Conrad had moved into third, while Woods was making th e outside work as he took th e lead from Varnes on th e se ve nth lap. Wh en Conrad sli p ped sligh tly off the groove, Conrad and G eorgie Price were waging a heated battle for second that went to Varnes. Varnes made his first ride on a big four-stroke a winning one as he borrowed National rider David Miller's Honda and took the lead on th e restart of the 600cc Expert final from Georgie Price, Ed Howe and PaulCrumling. Price went out after three laps, while Howe an d Crumling battled ov second.
