Jim Sisem ore roared to an o ther win on th e last lap in th e H andicap main and Bill Zirkle kept Rory Rundle at ba y for a trophy in Division T wo ac tion . The two top riders, Houston and Sisemore, went head to head in th e Scratch m a in. H ouston pulled th e pol e position but Sisemore, starting in ga te four was still a th reat coming from th e ou tside. Duane Yarrow a n d Robert Curry were left san dwiched between the two top ri ders . H ouston needed a grea t ga te to keep Sisem ore from shu tt ing th e door atthe first turn, a nd wh en the ' tapes went up H ouston was off like a shot: Sisemore ga ted fine but co u ld n ot break to the in side. H ouston held his positio n perfectl y through the tu rn, lea vin g Sisemore p layin g in th e marbles. Sisemore tried closing down the back straight b u t Houston was o n, takin g turns three and four .o n the rail. Houston grabbed so me brea thing room as they crossed the startfinis h line for th e first time. Sisemore kept close o n the next lap b ut Ho us ton put it away on la p three. Curry dueled with Yarrow all o f th e race and cam e o ut o n top at the fini sh . Only four of the six ri de rs w ho started th e H andicap main fi n ished, but a ll eyes were o n Sisemore as he cha sed leader Bob by H edden for five, _of th e six laps. The ' Midland, Mi ch igan native was runn in g high and h ot in th e loos e cushion in both cla sses, fending off th e challe nges of Joe Evans/Gen e Kru th /DC Cycle pilo t, Ri ck Knuth an d Gary Morel for th e 500cc crown a nd th en ca me back to again top Bobby Bro oks and Morel in a h otly-contested O pen class. ' T h is even t, sponsored b y Red Rider P ro m o tions , L td. , marked th e first time since 1963 that the bi g limestone half m ile a t the Tri-Co u n ty Fairgr ound h ad h osted a motorcycle event. T he scout racer wa s th e on ly 'Ill in ois rider to ever win th e prestigious Springfield Mile and win th e #1 p late and the ti tle of AMA Grand National Cham pion. T h e Rockford Rocket , Bullet Bill Tuman , took a ho t la p with che ckers during th e intermission activi ties. T he p ro gra m go t off to a fa st start with Shannon Wright pedali ng off th e line to lead the 50cc class into the first tu rn and slowly pull away from Randy Sm ith a nd Shane Garrison of th e win. Steve H all ma de even shorter work of the Min i class, tak ing a runaway wi n fro m Dana Cu rt in , Chris Payne and G arri son. In th e 125cc fin al David Allen kept th e pressure on Chad Barth, p u lle d · away for th e win wi th David Stan field h olding on for th ird. The ' 250cc class provided som e of th e best ac tio n of th e afternoon wh en Marshall Patrick pulled a h olesh ot a nd 'fed th e pack th rough the ' firs t turn with Dan Carter an d Ken H all in to w. Scott H uff go t a slow start but used the hi gh loose cus h io n throughou t th e fi rst lap to motor by everyone but Pa trick. Huff slip ped in beside P atr ick and for four m ore laps it was elb ow-to-elbow racing for th e lead. H uff got a good dri ve off of th e seco n d turn of the fifth lap and pu lled in front of Pa trick to stay. Dim Caner had th e best spot in th e house in third for th e w hole race, th ough h e was busy with Ken H all , th e even tua l fourth pl ace finisher. Childress takes two at Steel City MX By Davey Coombs DELMONT, PA, JUNE 25-26 West Virgin ia 's S teve Ch ild ress grabbed a pair o f overall wins a t the Stee l City AMA Amateur National R egi o nal Cham pio ns hi p s. C hil dress, moun ted on T eam G reen backedKawasakis, took a step closer to defending th e two Nation al titles he won a t th e Lorett a L ynn 's Final s last year in th e B class , only this time i n the Expert classes. Childress topped both the ' 250cc A Stock and Modified classes, then backed th ose finishes up wi th a seco n d and a third p lace finish in th e 125cc ra n ks. Steve Herman and Brian Carroll were ab le to de ny Ch ildress a fo ur-race sweep by bestin g the 125cc A Stock and Mo dified classes, respecti vely . A th ree-rnot o format was used a t the Steel City H onda Region al s in w h ic h a ri de r 's tw o best scores co u nted to wards th e overa ll . Ch ildress d idn't need a third m ot o in th e 250cc A Stock class after swee p in g to a pair of early m o to wins.
