Mickey Fay, who an~ounced .h ls retirement from professional racing today, went out in gra.nd style as he won the main event in the Expert class at the Chehalis Half Mile put on by the ML SL Helen's M/C Club. In the Expert heat race, Fay got the holeshot followed by Marty Zirbel; Kirk Strong, De~ Schnitzer and A.J. Eschwig. Within a lap , Strong slid u nder Zirbel and went looking for Fay, who was not to be caught. With two laps to go, Strong's tire valve stem spun off and he finished at half speed. Taking the checkers were Fay then Zirbel and Eschwig. Twelve riders lined up for the Expert main event with Zirbel getting the initial lead ahead .of Fay, Eschwig, Rod Rey~olds, Mike Sulliva n and Strong. Kit Farley dr~pped out just as Fay b lew by Zirbel. Eschwig passed Zirbel a lap later. Fay and Eschwig went out to a 30.-yard lead while Zirbel led Su l Iivan , Reynolds and Strong. Eschwig stuck to Fay like glue but never pulled even with him. The once beautiful, 70-foot wide track was now chewed up and geltin~ some ruts in the comers. On lap SIX, Fay came out of turn four and caught a rut which launched him into the air sideways. However, he never let off the gas and landed with the power on, keeping his co~po.sure to .th e checkered flag. Finishing behind him were Eschwig, Zirbel, Sullivan, Reynolds and Strong. In the J u n ior class main Dean . Autrey got the holeshot followed by Troy Yeo and Speedy Kell. Within the first lap, Yeo took over the lead but Kell took it away from him moments later. After the wild start, Kell went out to a comfortable lead while Yeo and Garth Mulkey continually traded positions with Yeo barely ge tting the advantage.. With two laps to go, Kevin Bass got by Mulkey and started to reel in Yeo. Coming out of turn four, Bass pulled up next to Yeo and they rode to the finish line side by side. Bass 50 : 1. Smith LAWRENCEBURG, IN, J U N E 24 Joe Basti n of Rising Sun, Ind ia na, riding for Jack's Motorcycle Sales and winner of his heat, went headto-head with Pat Behrle. iwinner of the second heat in the 250cc class at Lawrenceburg. Behrle took an early lead with Bastin hangi ng on trying to find a hole only to get shut out at each tur!1' With one more ro und to go, Bastin hooked u p and shot under Behrle to snatch the lead.. No time fo~ a recovery, Bastin shot across the line under the flag for the win. Phil Pa lmer returned to the track this week but couldn't get it together enough for his usual front r?w nde but did take a third for the night. In Open B action Frank Humphries had the key to the front door and used it twice. Midway through the feature a show stopping pile-up caused 'a restart. Ian Segedy couldn't take advantage of the restart having to leave the lead to Humphries and worry about holding off John Denny in a last lap dash for the flag. Pat Behrle and Grady Phillips traded the front spot lap-after-lap and often traded off at each turn, with Nicky Sterling right behind looking for the front runners to cross each other up, but as the feature lap count ra n out, between turn three and four it was Beh rl e inching under Phillips and in the run for the flag pulled across the line first.
