00 00 O"l ....... (From left to right) Bobby Schwartz. Rob Pfetzing and Lance King took Scratch main wins at Ascot. Costa Mesa and IMS. respectively. , Pfetzing motored the Dianetics/ Valvoline/One Grand/STP/ Ka l Gard/Shoei Weslake into the first turn ahead of Brad Oxley and Schwartz. Pfetzing inched his way . ahead with Schwartz trying every move in his vast bag of tricks to get by Oxley. Schwartz went wide on lap three and as they came off tum four the final time. he swooped by Oxley and tried to lock Pfetzing into his sights. Pfetzing had built up a . commanding advantage, though , and there was no way that Schwartz could catch him on the final circuit. Roy Ketting threw the checkered and it was Pfetzing with room to spare over Schwartz. When the Handicap main began, Jessee Finch, Randy Beddow and Mike Bloom staged a spirited war. Just behind them came Tuff McBride and Eddie Castro. These five riders battled for first but Lance King picked them off one at a time as he advanced towards the point position. King, riding the Gold's Gym/ Silkolene/JT Racing/Simpson / Daytona GM, methodically worked his way to first and pulled away for a half-straight victory. Castro and McBride battled it out for second with Castro gelling the nod. Charles Ermolenko emulated his older brother and scored convincing wins in his Division Two heat and the main. Schwartz; ICing top .Costa Mesa Speedwa y By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, JUNE 24 • Push came to shove between . two riders at the Orange County Fairgrounds Friday night but in the end, those two riders, Bobby Schwartz and Lance King, emerged victorious in . the First Division mains. The pushing came in tum one of the Scratch mam as the field jockeyed for position. The shove came two turns later when Schwartz clipped the rear tire of King's GM and sent him into orbit. King came downwith a thud but quickly scrambled to his feet, while Schwartz was a little slower to ride after bruising his knee. Schwartz beat Steve Lucero and Alan "Crazy" Christian off the line on the restart, while King tried to make the outside work. Christian tried the inside of Lucero in tum one on lap two. They made contact but Lucero maintained his spot as they came onto the back straight. Christian nosed his Jawa ahead as they entered tum three but Lucero swept back into second in tum four. Christian then got by Lucero for good in turn one on lap three and set his sights on Schwartz. Christian pulled up on Schwartz on the inside as they came off the final bend, and they crossed the line elbow-to-elbow with Schwartz's Budweiser/C.T.I. Brace/STP/SilkolenelTroy Lee Design Weslake taking the win by a valve stem. . King was still on fire when the Handicap main rolled onto the track and, the first red of the event came when Bart Bast parked and King went down to avoid him. The event was restarted with seven circuits remaining. King was off the 20 on the restart, trailing Tony Bienert and Steve Russell. King took his Gold's Gym/ Silkolene/,f! Racing/Simpson GM to the outside and passed Russell for second at the quarter mark. Jay Gianetti went after King on lap three, and at the same time King drove by Bienert for the lead. Bienert ended up parking near the wall and dropped from first to sixth. King then easily scored his third win of the week. Shawn McConnell came through the field and ended up second with Brad Oxley third. Results SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Schwanz (West 2. Alan Christian (Jawt 3. Steve Lucero (Gdn); 4. lance King (GM). McBride focuses on Speedway USA win By Scott Daloisio VICTORVILLE, CA, JUNE 25 Tuff McBride had a serious problem during the Handicap main at Speedway USA. The New York native was setting a quick pace in the event when one of his contact lenses slipped off with two laps remaining. Fortunately McBride was able to oneeye it to the Don Robinson checkered. McBride made it all the way to the main without posting a win but he was in fine form once the green light started the eight lapper. Local rider Tony Bienert had the early lead over Steve Russell, McBride and Scotty Brown. Bienert maintained his advantage until the halfway point when he began to slip off the groove. He went wide in every tum and at the end Desp ite losin g a contact len s during the Handicap m ain at Speedway USA. Tuff McBrid e (7 2) edged Ed Castro f or t he ~in. of the fifth lap, Ml$ride and Brown shot underneath for the first two positions. Brown was leaning all over McBride (Shoei/Red Baron Pizza! Wheeler Photography Jawa) as he attempted to find a way past on the inside, but McBride held him at bay until, for a split second, he parked in tum four on lap seven. Brown made a drastic move to avoid McBride and went tumbling to the dirt. That gave McBride a huge lead and he went on for the win over Brad Oxley, Scott Brant and Ed Castro. The Scratch main field was split with wily veterans and up and coming youngsters. The veterans were represented by Steve Lucero and Bobby Schwartz while the younger set featured Greg Hancock and Brant. Hancock got the drive off the pole and set the pace into the first comer over Lucero and Schwartz. Schwartz, who didn't have a chance off the line due to the slick conditions in gate three, dropped to last when Brant raced inside him in tum two. . Lucero went to the wide line and pulled even with Hancock as they brought the curtain down at the end of the first lap. They stayed elbowto-elbow in a crowd-pleasing battle until Lucero (Shoei/Kal-Gard/Oilzall /STP Godden) found the big drive and took the lead as they went down the back straightaway the second time. Schwartz eventually got past Brant for third. Lucero took the win for the second time of the season at Speedway USA with Hancock, who posted his best ever Speedway USA finish , second. McDowell moves at lodi St By Mikki McBride LOD!, CA, JUNE 25 Bobby McDowell won the Pro-Am and Open Expert classes today on his Bob Codd-sponsored Honda at the Lodi Cycle Bowl. . In the Pro-Am main, Harley rider Sal Hoffman jumped into the lead just ahead of McDowell. Mark Corsetti and Cory Perreault were fighting for the third spot with Corsetti keeping an edge on Perreault. On the fourth lap McDowell began to make his move on Hoffman. It looked almost like Hoffman shut down ' early for tum three and McDowell bumped into the back of him, but then dove under him in the tum to take over the first spot. Once by Hoffman he was gone with a terrific lead. . Corsui started catching up with Hoffman and trying to make a move on him, ' but Hoffman held his position. Perreault, quite a distance back at fourth was riding hard to stay ahead of Harley rider Mark Key, who almost caught him at the checkered flag. In the Open Expert McDowell nabbed first while Perreault got the second spot and Robert Damron fell into third on his ROlaX. Sal Hoffman grabbed the fourth spot while Harley riding Scott Chappell closed in to fifth. McDowell, again way out in front, was gone. Perreault went wide .co m i n g out of turn three and dropped back to fourth then was passed by Chappell, pushing him back to fifth. In the Vet Expert class Frank Nye did a great job coming through the pack after a rather slow start to take over first. Mark Butler and Dave Bostrom had a great battle going on for second placein which Butler held the edge until the checkered flag was thrown. The Pee Wee C class showed its stuff with Michael Patterson on a Yamaha passing Michael Ray ErIon the outside to take the first spot. In the B group.
