Hancock wins at Costa Mesa Spdwy By Scott Daloisio COST A MESA, CA, J UNE 3 Greg Hancock held o££ the determi ned bids of hard riding Steve L ucero . to ca pture th e - Handicap main at the Orange County Fairgrounds on K-Ocea n Night; H ancock, who celebrated his 18th bi rt hday tonight, rode like an old veteran at the fairgrounds track. Coming from the 30-yard line, H ancock swept the H andicap side of the program. H owever, L ucero gave him all he cou ld ha ndle in the main. Hancock won the race to the first bend over Kevin Kru gh and Scotty Brown but it was Lucero who caught everyo ne's eye o n the opening circuit. T he northern California native flew o££ a crowded 40-yard line and · was work ing o n th e leader by the en d of th e first circuit. Dubb Ferrell , wh o fell on th e openin g lap of th e Scra tch main, was crowded o ut a nd fell on the openi ng lap . Brown a nd Eddi e Castro sand wiched Krugh in turn three on th e second revolution and sent h im tumbling to th e ground. It was war at the head of the pack. Lucero con tin ually loo ked for a wa y to shoot hi s Godden thro ugh o n th e pole bu t H ancock kept slamming the door. If th at tu ssle wasn't enough, ' Castro and Brown ended up in a knock-down, drag-o ut contest for th ird. T he fans were treated with two spectacular fights at once. H ancock, who has been tabbed as a future member of the Bri tish Lea gue's Cradley H eath H eath en s, held h is ground and never lo st the lead o n the Penhall/Bel Ra y/Oakley/Bell / Grin Weslake.
