Brown finally asserted himself on the ba ck ch u te during the final lap . The fans roared after witnessing one of the season's most exciting events. The Scratch main opened dramati cally. Alan Christian sla m m ed th e STP / Advantage Boa ts /Cal Fab / Smith Goggles/Quaker State jawa into the lea d over Billy Hamill, Brown and Ferrell. Th en Ferrell threw his Weslake sideways and hit Brown on the knee. Ferrell went down while Brown did everyth ing but fall. Ferrell retired to the infield while Brown lost too much time to make up in only four laps. The job of catching Christian belonged to IS-year-old Hamill. The high school senior gave it a valiant try but Christian, who was racing speedway before Hamill began kindergarten ,wasn't about to lose h is lead . H e g lued his bright red machine to the groove and kept it there until he saw the checkered flag. Young Hamill contin ued in second with Brown settling for th ird . Browne bags win atDeAnzaMX By David Procida SUNNYMEAD, CA, JUNE 5 Eric Browne dominated the Pro class today at the California R a c in g Club 's first race at the DeAn za track in a long ti me. Bro wne ca me off the gate behind Todd Baldwin in moto one. Ba ld win put his SCRlTorco O il Suzuki into the lead slot and held off th e charges of the Team Green rider for th ree laps befo re losin g the lead. Baldwin chased Browne with Levi Nob le closing q uickly from the rear. Nob le had Chuck Whitmore in tow, making it a three-ri de r dice for second . On lap four, Whi tmore clipped by Noble and closed on Ba ld win with Browne starting to pull away from the pack. W hitmore caught and passed Baldwin, a nd as th e laps clicked off Baldwin lost another slo t to Noble. Noble closed in on Whitmore, but the ord er remained th e same for th e next three laps with Browne taking th e moto win. In mota two Baldwin again holesh o t with Browne, Noble a nd Whitmore trailing. Browne wast ed no time in getting by Baldwin , leav ing him to defend seco n d from Whitmore, wh o h ad now passed Noble. Noble returned th e favor by d iving under Whitmore a nd the two cl osed on Baldwin. Browne ex tended h is lead 10 over 10 seco nds o ver th e Noble/Whitmore d ice. Downen perfect at Motosports Park MX By Don Hachmeister BYRON , IL, JUNE 5 Ro n Down en took a perfect 1-1 score to win the Senior Men's class at Mo torsports Par k. , At the dro p of the first m ot a gate, Down en took the lead. Tim Klauser gated seco n d and Scott Wa llenberg started third. Klauser stayed close to Down en , hopin g to take advantage of any m istakes th e, leader m ight make. b ut Downen rode a flawless mota, stretching th e lead lap by lap. With Down en and Klauser cruising in the top spots, jim j ohns on pushed his Honda into th ird p ast Wa llenberg. Gerhart Ward a nd Peted Rei tsch, after a second lap get-off, tried to mount a charge fro m far back in the pack. Through the middle laps, Wallenberg, Ward and j ohnson traded the third spot. By the ch eckered flag, Ward took over third, Wa llenberg held fourth and Reitsch moved past j ohnson for fifth. Klauser 'ju m ped o ut 10 a n ea rly lead in th e seco n d mala.
