C lem Sturdly overcame a dead-engine start to win the Ultralight Superbike race at Minnesota 's Bra inerd Internationa l Raceway_ front to a n earl y lead and taking the win over Shelly Kann and his brother Lance in the first moto. Kann led th e first lap of the second moto, but relinquished her lead to Cra ig Cunningham on the next lap. Danny Ed monson took third this time with Lance Cunningham in fourth. Bryan eventually edged ahead wh ile Bobby held on to a close second. .In th e main, Bryan McDowe ll grabbed the holeshot with Bobb y coming off fourth behind Danny McDonnell - on a borrowed Rotax - in second and Honda-riding Paul Iwanaga in third. H ar d-riding Mark Key was in fifth on his trusty Harley. In th e fourth la p , Bobby McDowell shot by Iwanaga on the outside of turn two to take over the third spot. Key also managed to get by Iwanaga to grab fourth , then took ou t after Bobby. Bobby was still on th e move and went by McDonnell to nab seco n d . Then he scooted up to brother Bryan 's back wh eel to put 'the move on him. Bryan held his ground though a nd cam e in first at the checkered flag . In the 500cc 'Open Expert main , Ted T ayl or took his Rotax into th e lead . Robert McDonnell , riding a Honda , was off second, followed by Bryan McDowell in third, and Bobb y McDowell in fourth. Bryan dashed by McDonnell to take over second with Bobb y o n hi s heels. Bobb y a nd Bryan went backand-forth, fighting for second but Bobb y managed to hold th e pos it ion and th en pass T aylor after th e 'w hite flag. Bryan tried hard to follow but came in a close th ird. In the 80cc Junior/Expert class, everyo ne was on - their feet as Yamaha-rid er J ake Zemke, H ondarid er Ben Bostrom and Kawasakirider Matt Wait rode lik e demons to outdo each other. Zemke sta rted with the lead , with Bostrom ge tti ng aro und him in turn two. Zemke go t him back on th e front straigh t while Wait tried th e in side, th en the o utside, looking for a way around. Wait fin all y go t by Bostrom to push hard on Zemke but didn 't make it by the checkered flag. Wait and Zemke battled it in th e l25cc Novi ce/Junior class too . This _ time, Wait got the ho leshot and Zemke tried everything to get around h im with Wait doing an excellent job of holding him off. KEL LOGG, MN , MAY 29 Robbie Engstrom co n tinued to rack up wins in the Distri ct 23 Expert classes by adding two more at the first race of the year at the Midway Recreation Park facility. En gstrom reeled off four perfect mot os in the 125 and 250cc classes. Other winners tak in g two classes were Brandon Backes in the Mini Heavyweight divi sion and th e l25cc Youth class, a nd Rick Munson winner in th e 25- and 30-Plus age groups. Rob Engstrom took th e lead in th e first turns of th e first l 25cc Expert moto an d led all th e way for a win. Brian Fern displaced Dan a Hunt o n the second lap ( 0 take over second p lace but co uldn' t ma tch Engstrom 's pace. Hunt came under attack fro m Tim Bartylla and dropped to fourth wi th two laps remaininl?' At the checkered the top four remained in that order tail ed by Bill Engs tro m and Bryan Hunt. Bryan Hun t p ulled the holeshot in the seco nd moto and held on to the lead for two laps wit h Engstrom and Scott Ruegg in -the next two places. Engstrom pulled away from Hunt to ensure a win after making a pa ss on the third lap. Fern pa ssed Bartylla and Ru egg on the same lap tomove into third. The race ended with Engstrom, H unt , Fern , Ruegg and Bartylla in the top five slots. The 250cc clas s saw Engstrom win both rnotos, bu t th ere was some excellent racing - including a good battle between Engstrom and J eff O ldenberg early in th e second moto. Each took wins in Sprint racin g and wo n th eir respec tive clas ses in th e T rophy Dash events. Christian son, on his Burnsvill e Mo torsports Yamaha SRX600, cont inued h i s total domin ation o f U ltralig ht Prod uctio n ' and Supersport classes , posting flag-to-flag wins . Williams, still in th e process of sort ing out th e handling and power characteristics of his Lofgren Racin g-prep ared '88 Suzuki GSXR, . was pl eased with the results from the new bik e, but felt there was sti ll room for improvement. In Middl eweight Supersport, it was Ro ger Lundsten on a Honda CR600 Hurricane posting an impressive win. Lundsten, wh o began the season as a Novice an d was elevated to Expert sta tus after the May event, cam e from a back row gri d position to overt ake early lead er Wes Wicklund on lap five. Lundsten p ull ed aw ay for the win, wi th th e Hurrican es of Wicklund and Mik e Moores following. Lundsten nearl y won Middleweight Su perbike also, bu t wasn't able to make a last lap pass on seaso ned v~teJ?n. La~~<;. N~~~r .st~s~.• Norby took the win, with Lundsten second and Wicklund third. In H eavyweigh t Superbike, AMA Superbike regular John Jacob came from the fift h row of the gri d to lead over Todd Strang and Williams. Jacob , on a Yamaha FZR7 50,' dropped out after the eighth lap and Strang took the win followed by the FZR of J oh n Mulligan and the GSXR of Williams.
