Farnum took another shot at Gordon at th e star t of lap six. He blew by Gordon but had too much speed for the upcomi ng corner and fell. T hat left Gordon with a co mmandin g lead with less tha n three la ps to go. He got a tremendous gate o u t of th e number two slot and set the pace in to the first bend over Alan Christian a nd Dubb Ferr ell. Ferrell went outside Christian for seco nd on the back chute bu t Christian wrestled the position back before the end of the first go-around. ' Ferrell, switch in g strategy, ducked to the inside and ch ecked to see if Christian was vulnerable down low . He wasn 't and he maintained hi s second place standing. The Jerry King checkere d waved and once again Schwartz had the win. Christian was a close second with Ferr ell third. The Handicap main started off with a bang, wh en J ay G ianetti highsided in tum on e and came down on hi s head . The red flag was 'disp layed. Andy No rt hrup jumped to th e point o n the restart with Trinon Cirell o a n d Bi ll y H amill r igh t behind. Northrup 's lead was short lived as Ci rell o quickl y relegated him to seco nd. McConnell was on Cirello's rear tire and when Cirello parked co ming out of turn four on lap five, McConnell rod e pas t for th e lead. Cirello continued to fad e and dropped all the way to fourth at the finish. McConnell was perfect to the end and bagged hi s first checkered of th e year. H ead First, a loosely kn it bunch of sem i-serious racers, di spl ayed just enough tea m spiri t to avoid taking each other out as th ey dominat ed th e 250cc Amateur and the Open Amateur classes. The lone interl oper was Ri chard Edwards, who snuck into seco nd place in the 250cc class. Christy Scheffer won th e 250cc Amateur class going away, with Lou DeLousia and Rob Bibbins scrapping over third. After a race-long battle, DeLousia, who is very hard to pass, came out on top. The order of finish was scrambled in the Open class with Bibbins th e victor over DeLousia in second and Sch effer in third. Two other members of th e team checked in with a win in th e Senior A cla ss by Dave Sch effer and a second in th e Senior B class going to Sco tt Hadaway and th e win go ing to Jim Reese. Crai g Estelle attempted to repeat last week's O pen Expert win. Estelle had th e spee d but mental errors relega ted him to fourth p lace as J ason Fletcher romped to the class win , foll o wed by an energized Bill Newkirk. J ay Skid more was the speedy, rolling roadblock in third, h olding Est elle's a tten tion wi th Du ane Veeder in fourth. George Lazor and Warren Diem battled for four co mp lete laps with La zor stun ning the cro wd, Diem and himself en route to the Division One Scratch main win. John " Boogie" Lewi s left th e rest of th e field to battle for second as he ra n away with the H andicap cash.• As they lined up for th e main event Diem had the pol e while Lazor was up against the wall in the fourth spot. Lewis and Tom Burge, th e other two finali sts, jumped the gu n , breaking th e tape. Official Don H awkins docked th em both with a 10-yard penalty, setti ng up th e Diem -Lazor shoot-out. Diem took th e initial lead and stuck to th e inside down the back ch u te. Open A r ide r Lindeman had retir ed from enduro riding to pursue trials ridi ng. H is trials' experie nce seemed to be a · huge adva n tage in the slip pery Nebraska clay. His score of II points dropped was two m in utes better than th e next best. There was a four-way tie for second and AA rider Kevin Davis came out o n top a t the tie-breaker , followed by 250cc A rid er Mark Mauz, AA rid er Dwain T aylor and AA rid er Mark Hynes. Competition wa s ti ght throughout th e AA class with all seven rid er s under a fiv e point blanket. The com pe tition was just as fierce in th e 250cc A class wh ere KTMmounted Mau z was only a minute ahead of Don Barr , aboard a Honda. .
