Estelle wo n his hea t and th en slam med into th e lead o ut of a first turn cru nc h in a wi ld Expe rt final wi th out so much as a look back. H is win, on the 'Joe Swanson -tuned 600 H arl ey-Davidson, was as co nvincing as it was prett y. Before the race, Estelle was overheard expressing hi s preference fo r a cus hion track, but he obviously adapted well to the hard, smooth SDR su rface. Dua ne Veeder and his H onda eked ou t seco nd over a ha rd-cha rging Woo d-R ota x mounted A.J. Snoop aft er a race-long battle whi ch a lso involved eventua l fourth . pl ace J ay Skidmore. In the 250cc Expert final it was Georgi e Price a nd his Kawasaki over th e Hond as of Bob Weiss a nd Duane Veeder. . In th e Amateur ranks it was a sto ry book da y for two riders, Brent Livingston and Ken ny Coolbeth Jr. , as th eir first rides in their respe ctive new bikes netted class wins. AIRY, NC, AP R. 17 Mar k IV H onda 's Ta m Topha m charged back from a second moto cras h to ca tch T win City Kawasaki 's Jay Hauser and complete a four mo to sweep of th e 125 and 250cc classes a t Beech n ut Park MX. T he openi ng '250cc moto showed Topha m 's intent ions as he quickly motored away fro m a ba ttl e between Rob ert Patton and Ha user. At th e halfway Topha m held a six-seco nd cus hion as H a user' d ispl aced Patto n ' a nd sett led into a p ace that eq ualed _Top ha m. T he top th ree positio ns were set with Da vid Monda y ta king fourt h. Moto two saw Top ha m a nd Hauser in a ba ttl e that lasted until Topham lowsided and dropped to third. Topham spe nt th ree la p s "reeling in Pa tto n and H auser, taki ng th e lead th rough the camelbacks. H auser finished seco nd a head of Pa tto n a nd Ran dy Bull in. Topham 's sweep conti nued as he took the lead earl y in both 125cc mOlOS and never looked back. Lee Coomes and Dean Wa rd kept th e racing interesting as th ey dueled in both motos with Coomes successfu lly clinchi ng second. Mark Du r h a m wh eeli ed hi s Yamaha to a double moto win in th e 500cc class with Ho nda of Winston Sa lem 's J err y Robertson edging J.D. Ho rton for second. Mini class action was a Kawasa ki affair as Kenny Fri th and Keith York d id battle in bo th the Senior Mini a nd Super Mini classes . Frith was the ear ly leader in th e first Super Min i rno fo wit h York and J ason Freed in pursuit. York used the whoops to move into the lead with Fri th return in g the a vor two laps la ter. Fri th went on to win ' the mot o o ver York an d Freed. Frith topped th e second mo to over York, then fini sh ed off the Sen ior Min i class as well followed by Yor k and Matthew Freed. Second was Sam Markley wi th 48 and Greg Kris t was th ird wi th 57 points. J eff Umstead won th e Advanced class wi th 36 points. Second was Ron R uss o n a Beta with 49 a nd Brian Ahe rns was -third wi th 58 poi n ts. In the Intermed ia te class Ken Sprague won a close battle over Brad Bouch er. Both riders had 26 points , but Sprague won it wi th 33 cleans to Bo uch er 's 29. Brad 's brother Scott Bouch er was third with 30 poin ts. T he Senior cla ss winner was T ad Mu scott wi th 31 po ints, Ed L ogan was second with 36 a nd with 61 po ints for th ird was J ohn Cline. An oth er tiein the No vice class sa w thewin going to Denn is Mich over Steve Hills. Each accum ulated 15 po ints but Mich won with 33 cleans to Hills' 32. Kawasak i's Steve Chi ldress won bo th A divisions whi le Shortri dge return ed for an easy win in the Enduro class . The first two laps in mo to one of Open Amateur act io n saw J immy Leach holding th e lead under intense pressur e from J eff Lyons. On la p three of th e five-lap mo to Sho rtri dge moved up to mak e it a th ree-wa y battle for the lead and, a t o ne point, all th ree racers were airbo rne to· ge ther over a j ump. One la p la ter, Leach had dropped to third a nd Lyons had th e lead over Shortridge. Lyo ns held on for th e win o ver Shortridge and Leac h. The trio ret urned in mot o two for another wh eel-to-whee l fight for the lead. Shortr idge led at the sta rt but. a second-la p sp ill set him back to third sp ot, giving th e point pos iti on to Leach with Lyons clo se beh ind. Leach a nd Lyons diced all moto, but a late-m ote charge by Sh ortridge netted th e win and th e overall. Lyons tallied 1-3 for second over Leach's 3-2. Yam aha of J ohnson Cit y-backed Lyons leads th e series by two points over Shortridge. The openi ng Senio r (30+) moto saw a nother three-way brawl as Steve Lady grabbed th e holesh ot, Series leader Steve Lewis a nd T erry Johnson spent the early momen ts swa pping th e second position back and fort h . Lady stalled his H onda's en gine on lap two, giving the lead to Lewis. Lady was quickl y back in the hunt a nd rega ined th e front position whe n Lewis sp un oUL On th e last lap, Lady went ou t of control in the triple jumps and saw Lewis go by for th e win. Lady recovered to finish third behind J ohnson. J ohnson won moto two to claim th e overall honors over Lewis' 1-2.
