Robert Peterson DAYTON, 10, MAY 14 Smith Optics/O 'Neal US A/ Ka l Gard-sponsored Larry Jackson went three for fou r toda y in th e 250 a nd 125cc Pro classes to claim th e lion's share of th e purse money at Skyline MX Park. Jackso n rode much of the second 250cc Pro rnoto withou t a sea t to capture I-I moto wins. In 250cc Pro ac tio n Jackson, Mike Harris and H onda rider T odd Sm ith were quick off th e ga te as rn oto o ne got underway. J a ckson immediatel y built up a lead that he held to th e flag. Harris battled with Sm ith for second wi th the nod going lo H arris. Bill 's Cycle Sh op rider Lance Kelsey a nd Robert Hayball filled o ut the to p five. As th e second rnoto got underway . Jackson was seen circulating witho u t a sea t. Smith pulled out a lead over H a rris, w h i le J a ckson a n d Kelsey fill ed o ut th e top four. J ackson was on th e move a nd got by H arris, th en set his sigh ts on Sm ith. J ackson was forced to stand a lmost the whole 20-minute rnoto a nd blew by Sm ith on lap five. Jackson continued to lead to the ch eckers with Smith, H arris, and Kelsey finishing second through fourth. . In th e l25cc Pro ac tion, J ackson aga in led fro m the gate over the Smith brothers, Thad a nd Todd. .Jackson held on to win the first moto , but Thad Smith managed to hold off J ackson in th e seco nd moto and claim the overall win. In th e Over 25 Expert class Robert Peterson was quick off th e ga te in the first moto followed b y Kell y SOrenson and Dal e Bohm . Bohm passed Peterson over th e doubles a nd proceeded to pull ou t a small lead. Hot on his tail was Sorenson , who eventually passed Bohm for the lead. Robert Rudd moved into th ird a head of P eterson and J eff Clawson. Sor enson bent his shifter on lap th ree and fell back to third. Russell, Hall decimate Nelson ledges RR By larry Bell WARREN, OH, MAY 8 Sco tt Russell ro lled into Nelson Led ges Ro ad Course for WERA Regional sprint races with a set of Vic Fasola- tu ne d Suzuki s a n d a winn in g streak stretching back to early spring, and left with wins in A and B Producti on, Formula Open a nd seco nd place in C Producti on. H e a lso won almost $2500 in contingen cy money from Suzuki, EBC , Kal -Gard a nd Dunlop which ra ised h is checkbook to over $19,000 this year. A near-record opening race da y turnout o f close lo 300 riders saw Russell's main com pe ti tio n co me fro m Kurt H all on- a H onda. H all had the victory spo tlig h t b y win n ing the combined classes of C Su perbike a nd Vin tage Five. In C Producti on, Ex pert Hall, sponsored by Klotz/Metzeler/Fox Racing/Tsubaki/HRT , a nd Russell , spons ored by Dunlop/ T eam H amm er / E B C/ Ka l - G a r d/ R - K Chain , were close for on ly a few laps. Hall then turned o n the a fterb u rners lo hi t lap times in the I ;I4.55-range. This ca used mor e than a few eyebrow s to be rai sed as a TZ750 just a couple o f sum mers ago wo u ld have been good to hit 1:16 flat. . Rega rd ing his race wi th Hall , Russell said, " T he key to the Katana is keepi ng the corneringspeed up to ' keep the grou nd clearance up. " Russell also said that he would not be coming back to Nelson Ledges because he had to ride co nstantly right o n the edge, which was dangerous, and the track needed major modifications. H e'll also be racing a t Suzuka in Japan on the sa me da te. as the Nelson Ledges 24-Hour. According to tra ck personnel , Nelson 'Ledges will hold a vintage car ra ce in mid-June to help ra ise funds to repave th e track. Yentzers smoke 'em at Trail·Way SX By Jeff Crites HANOVER, PA , MAY 14 The Yen tzer brothers , Rodney and J effrey, from Carlisle, P ennsylvania , were the bi g wi n ne rs a t the T railWay Sp eedway's su pe rcross . Rodney scored double wins in th e l25cc Expert and 250cc Expert classes, while you nger brother scored his win in th e 80cc (14-15) class. In the I25cc Expert main , W. Keith Banta J r. rode hi s Suzuki lo the lead a t th e drop o f th e ga te. Then Rodney T entzer followed Banta on his rear tire loo kin g for the opening he need ed lo obtain the lead. ' That occurred as th e pair ca me off the infield jumps onto th e main straight lo co m p lete the second of th e eight laps that made up th e feature. Banta came o ff the fin al turn high, allowin~ Yentzer to go underneath as the pair approached the first turn, a hard left-bander followed b y a quick right. Yentzer held his line going through ·one forcing Banta to go wide. This was ' all that Yentzer needed as he built a com m andin g lead fin ishing 15 seconds ahead of Banta a t the checkers. T ed Orr finished third. Yen tzer th en go t h IS 250 Yamaha ready lo do battle again with Banta in th e 250cc Expert night cap. At the dr op o f the gate, Yentzer was fir st ou t into th e first turn. Following a close second was T im Ben isderfer. Throughout th e eight- la p final , Benisderfer stayed on Yentz er' s rea r tire, but that was as clo se as he cou ld get. The margin of victory a t th e checker was four bike len gths.
